Why Your Commander Deck Doesn't Do the Thing: A 7-Step Deck Autopsy

Step Two — What Does the Deck Do Before Its Commander Arrives?
The command zone creates a dangerous deckbuilding habit because the most important card is always available. It becomes easy to construct the remaining ninety-nine cards on the assumption that the commander will resolve, survive and provide whatever engine the deck is missing. That assumption can produce a list that looks beautifully synergistic until the commander is countered or removed twice.
A resilient deck should begin becoming itself before the commander reaches the battlefield. A blink deck can deploy useful creatures with enters-the-battlefield abilities, an aristocrats deck can establish sacrifice outlets and disposable bodies, and a graveyard strategy can begin filling the graveyard. The commander should accelerate or enhance that structure rather than being the only component capable of switching the machine on.
Some strategies genuinely revolve around an effect that is difficult to reproduce anywhere else, so commander dependency is not automatically bad. It simply creates a cost that needs to be acknowledged. Protection, alternative engines and efficient recasting become more important as dependence increases.
A simple diagnostic test is to imagine that your commander has already died twice. If the remaining ninety-nine cards still resemble a functioning deck, the foundation is probably healthy. If almost every card in your hand suddenly becomes dramatically worse, you have found a structural vulnerability.
Step Three — How Many Cards Actually Perform Each Job?
Commander lists can appear more coherent than they really are because many cards belong to the same theme while performing entirely different functions. An aristocrats deck may contain forty cards associated with sacrificing creatures, yet some create bodies, some sacrifice them, some reward the deaths, some recur the creatures and some only function once several other pieces are already present.
That is the difference between thematic density and functional density. A Blood Artist-style payoff is powerful when creatures are actually dying, but it contributes very little if the deck cannot reliably create disposable creatures or sacrifice them. A sacrifice outlet is important infrastructure, but an outlet without suitable resources to sacrifice does not constitute an engine by itself.
The same problem occurs in almost every archetype. Blink decks can contain too many exciting enters-the-battlefield creatures and too few ways to blink them. Token decks can run a large number of cards that reward a wide battlefield without enough reliable token production. Spellslinger decks can overload on spectacular payoffs while running too few cheap spells to trigger them consistently.
The solution is to define the functional jobs required for the deck to work and count those separately. Cards that overlap several roles are particularly valuable because they reduce the number of hands containing the wrong half of the engine. A creature that generates value on entry and is simultaneously an excellent blink target contributes more structurally than a narrow payoff that only becomes impressive once everything else is already working.
