Reality Fracture gives Carth the Lion a reason to rebuild rather than merely add one or two new planeswalkers. EDHREC’s October 8 list removes roughly $330 of expensive cards from an older Golgari shell and replaces them with a package built around nineteen planeswalkers and nine cards that create or support Empowered Jace tokens. The resulting deck is presented at about $150 and aimed at Bracket 2 play.
Carth remains the structural payoff. His triggered ability digs for planeswalkers when he enters or when one of your planeswalkers dies, while his static ability effectively adds loyalty to every activation. Reality Fracture expands both sides of that equation. Cheap planeswalkers can enter, activate above rate, and then be cashed in for cards; Empower Jace support provides additional loyalty bodies without requiring every slot to be a traditional planeswalker card.
The rebuild divides its support deliberately. Defenders and expendable creatures protect loyalty totals, ramp accelerates Carth and the more expensive walkers, and recursion turns destroyed planeswalkers into repeatable value. The article identifies concrete additions and cuts rather than treating the set as a generic Superfriends upgrade. Removing premium staples also changes the deck’s incentives: it is less dependent on resolving one expensive card and more capable of presenting several modest engines over consecutive turns.
That does not remove the archetype’s familiar weaknesses. Wide creature boards can attack multiple planeswalkers at once, Carth is vulnerable before he generates a death trigger, and drawing Empower support without enough loyalty permanents can leave underpowered cards in hand. Board wipes that hit noncreature permanents are especially punishing.
The useful development is therefore both strategic and economic. Reality Fracture supplies enough connected pieces to reshape the ratios of an established commander while cutting the list’s cost substantially. Players receive a testable nineteen-walker framework, defined protection and recursion packages, and a clear explanation of what the new cards replace—not an evergreen ranking of good Golgari planeswalkers.
