Design Files: Mirrodin, Part 1

Making Magic

The Mana Forge Digest

I'm revisiting my 'Design Files' series with the Mirrodin block, focusing on white and blue cards in a four-part look at this artifact-focused Magic set.

Key points

• New format: Print entire design file in order
• Covering white and blue cards for the Mirrodin block
• Part of 'Design Files' series about Magic set design history

<!--more-->

What you get

• Detailed look at a specific Magic set's design process
• Historical context on Magic design stages and themes
• Access to early designs that may have been altered or reworked for print

Why it matters

This series provides insight into the creative process behind Magic sets, including how they evolve from initial concepts to final printed cards.

Details

I begin by looking at all white and blue cards in the Mirrodin design file. This set was part of a block focused on artifacts, led by Bill Rose during an era before today's exploratory design structure.

The Mirrodin block followed themes like multicolor (Invasion) and the graveyard (Odyssey). As an artifact-focused set, it aimed to showcase this mechanic in innovative ways.

I'll be printing the entire file for each article, allowing readers to see how cards were developed from initial concepts through design iterations.

Good to know

• This series is part of a broader look at Magic's design history
• The Mirrodin block was released as part of the third stage of Magic design
