Deck Velocity: The Commander Metric Nobody Talks About
Two Commander decks can use almost identical deckbuilding ratios and still perform completely differently. Deck velocity explains how quickly a deck gains meaningful access to the cards it actually needs.

Measuring Velocity in Real Games
You do not need a perfect mathematical formula to make the concept useful. During several games, pay attention to roughly how many cards you can meaningfully access by turn six. Include additional cards drawn, useful filtering, playable cards exiled, relevant cards milled, tutors used and resources recovered from the graveyard.
Then examine the games where the deck stalled. An empty hand usually points toward insufficient card advantage. A full but irrelevant hand suggests a problem with selection or functional distribution. Seeing very few cards suggests low velocity, while seeing thirty cards without assembling anything coherent points toward a different structural issue entirely.
The purpose of measuring velocity is therefore diagnostic rather than competitive. It provides better language for explaining why a deck failed instead of treating every consistency problem as a request for more raw card draw.
Velocity and Redundancy Work Together
This relationship becomes especially important when deciding how many copies of a particular function a deck needs. Suppose one deck contains six sacrifice outlets but sees very little beyond its normal draw step. Another contains only four outlets but draws, surveils and filters through a much larger part of the library. The second deck can easily find its smaller package more consistently.
The opposite is also possible. A deck can see an enormous number of cards while still failing to locate the function it needs because the library simply contains too few successful hits. Velocity cannot compensate indefinitely for a structural shortage, just as redundancy cannot completely compensate for a deck that barely moves through itself.
Thinking about both variables together is more useful than treating either as a universal solution. The question becomes not only how many relevant cards are present, but how likely the deck is to encounter one at the point where it matters.
The Goal Is Not Maximum Velocity
More velocity is not automatically better because every draw spell, filter effect and tutor occupies a slot that could instead contain interaction, protection, a threat or a win condition. A deck can become extremely efficient at moving through a library that contains too little worth finding.
Different strategies also value access differently. Combo decks often prioritize selection because particular cards matter more than generic board presence, while toolbox decks gain tremendous value from flexible tutors. Graveyard decks can transform self-mill into access, and aggressive decks often prefer velocity attached to proactive permanents so that seeing more cards does not require giving up tempo.
The useful question is therefore not simply how many copies of an effect a deck contains. It is how many copies exist and how efficiently the deck can reach them. Once those ideas are considered together, the ninety-nine cards stop looking like a static pile and start looking like a path through which the deck moves.
That path is deck velocity.
