Esper Affinity leads Pauper’s first Zeta-legal Challenge without dominating it

The first 59-player MTGO Pauper Challenge after Zeta cards became legal made Esper Affinity the most-played deck, but its 51.43% win rate and an aggro-heavy Top 8 show adoption without early dominance.

Pauper’s first Magic Online Challenge with Zeta downshifts legal produced a measurable shift toward artifact shells, but not an immediate takeover. The 59-player September 24 event made Esper Affinity the most-played archetype. Its non-mirror win rate was 51.43%, a reasonable result rather than evidence that the deck has already broken the format.

The new cards are nevertheless changing construction. Esper lists combine Baleful Strix, Dispatch and Cut Down, while Boros Moxite and Mono-White Aggro are adopting Dispatch through Ancient Den, Darksteel Citadel and other artifact support. Early League lists also used Strix in Dimir Faeries, where ninjutsu can return it to hand for repeated card advantage. Vandalblast appeared much less often, suggesting that the most feared sideboard addition may initially be the least influential of the headline downshifts.

The Challenge results provide a useful counterweight to raw adoption. Three Elves decks reached the Top 8, alongside Mono-Red Madness, Mono-Red Rally and three Affinity variants. Mono-Red Madness won the event, while Elves and Madness posted non-mirror win rates above 60%. Those aggressive decks can punish opponents spending early turns experimenting with slower artifact engines.

This is a genuine trend signal because it combines League adoption, a 59-player tournament and several independent deck-building responses. It is still only the first online Challenge after the September 23 legality change. One event cannot establish a settled metagame or justify a ban conclusion, and the paper results previously seen for Dispatch do not automatically predict Magic Online. The clearest early reading is that Zeta has widened Affinity and artifact-based options while established aggro remains fully capable of exploiting the transition.
