Calix

An agent of fate learning the limits of his design

Calix was made to return Elspeth to the Underworld. Following that purpose took him beyond Theros, leaving a question no command could answer: what remains when the hunt is over?

Profile

Why Calix matters

Klothys did not raise Calix; she made him. The god of destiny created an agent specifically to prevent Elspeth from escaping the Underworld. His first identity was a task, with no remembered childhood or chosen profession behind it.

Elspeth repeatedly defeated her inexperienced pursuer. Calix learned from each encounter, but improvement did not close the exit. When she finally left Theros, the apparent impossibility of continuing his purpose ignited his spark, and he followed.

The pursuit later reached into his dreams. He studied remembered battles while asleep, seeking a perfect answer to Elspeth's skill. Success frightened him as well: capturing her threatened to leave him without the purpose around which his existence had formed.

After the Phyrexian war, Calix lost his spark and appeared as a human druid still associated with fate and enchantments. That change limits his old freedom of movement; it does not establish that he captured Elspeth or discovered an independent life.
