Why Alpharael matters

Alpharael grows up within the Monoist community of Susur Secundi beside his sister Raphaella. Their faith honours individual will while teaching that the universe culminates in a final intelligence reached through the supervoid. When Raphaella accepts the plunge, time dilation leaves her visible on the horizon, trapped in an endless destruction Alpharael cannot interpret as paradise. Grief, envy and disbelief collapse into a wish to follow her.

He volunteers for an assault on the Dawnsire and receives sekhar, a captive microvoid meant to carry him into the promised Next Eternity. Combat strips away the certainty he borrowed from ritual. Rather than activate the bead for salvation, Alpharael hurls it as a weapon and sacrifices a hand to gain one more minute of ordinary life. Captain Slats recognises the choice and permits him to flee, even as the Endstone rewrites Syr Vondam's fatal wound.

His crash on Kavaron irradiates nearby Kav and places the Endstone into his remaining hand. Contradictory memories make him unusually responsive to its causal power. Sami rescues him; Haliya hunts him; repeated revisions force both young believers to admit how much of their conviction hid personal fear. Alpharael suspects even his sister's decision may have been arranged so that he would become useful to the stone.

At Infinite Guideline he tries to obtain an impossible encryption key by trusting a future revision, then learns that the stone does not reward theory on demand. He and Haliya protect one another through the station's collapse and carry the ferry back to the Seriema. The being that reclaims the Endstone calls him touched by its core and knocks his mind aside. Alpharael survives with no settled cosmology, which is precisely the future he once thought unbearable.
