Alquist Proft
Ravnican detective who distrusts a perfect answer more than an unfinished question
Alquist Proft solves crimes by building ordered possibilities inside an exacting mind. His confidence can exhaust allies, but his refusal to confuse reputation with evidence makes him invaluable when Ravnica wants a convenient culprit.
Profile
Why Alquist Proft matters
Proft is a detective shaped for Ravnica, a city where every wall can hide a guild agreement and every witness belongs to several histories at once. He approaches a scene by separating observation from assumption, arranging possibilities in a disciplined mental structure until contradictions reveal the route forward. The method gives him formidable focus and equally formidable self-regard. Proft is rarely tempted to soften a conclusion for the comfort of the room, yet the best of his work begins when he recognises that being certain too early is another way to stop investigating.
Teysa Karlov’s murder offers the city an immediate answer. Etrata is an assassin, appears connected to the scene and cannot account for the missing span in her own memory. Proft sees that the evidence is almost too well behaved. A professional without motive or recollection may be dangerous, but she is not proof of her own guilt. Taking Etrata into his custody turns a suspect into a partner and makes Proft responsible for a theory the guilds would rather dismiss before it threatens anyone more respectable.
The case expands through attacks, manipulated citizens and the death of his colleague Kylox. Proft keeps reasoning while grief and danger strip away the distance he usually maintains. Etrata contributes routes, instincts and psychic tools the Agency cannot reproduce; Kaya can question the dead but cannot make testimony impartial. Proft’s task is to join those partial truths without pretending his intellect floats above them. The trail to Oba succeeds because the investigators test one another’s blind spots instead of competing to be the single brilliant mind in the room.
His later intervention in the Duskmourn rescue demonstrates what Ravnica’s new era demands from a detective. A mystery can now leave the plane through an Omenpath, and a locked room may be an entire hostile world. Proft helps establish an escape route from outside the House, coordinating knowledge he cannot gather alone with people fighting on the other side. The feat does not make him a planeswalker. It makes him something newly necessary: an investigator willing to treat the Multiverse as one connected scene without assuming any part of it exists for him to solve.
