Why Cerys matters
Cerys inherits a Shadowmoor home full of mould, old journals and the unfinished work of her uncle Gethin. Restoring the rooms becomes a way to hold grief without freezing inside it. A letter he never sent introduces her to Rhain, a correspondent living across the aurora.
Their exchange begins with plants and develops into intimacy before either asks what the other looks like. Cerys values the mind present in the letters, but does not know that Rhain's scars carry a curse or that his requests for medicine were attempts to survive it.
A hidden sprig of dawnglove exposes the decision Gethin could not complete. Elven custom protects the sacred flower, yet obedience would leave Rhain to die. Cerys chooses the person, repairs the Reliquary of Twilight as well as she can and crosses into Lorwyn with the cure.
The medicine saves Rhain while the damaged reliquary fails to protect Cerys. Sunlight twists her reactions into contempt that contradicts her purpose. Rhain recognises the conflict, carries her back and refuses to confuse involuntary words with chosen action. Their meeting makes vulnerability, not appearance, the final truth of their courtship.
