Why Etrata matters
Etrata is a vampire assassin associated with House Dimir, trained to move through the routes respectable Ravnica pretends not to have. She notices exits, pressure points and changes in another person’s attention before most people decide a room is dangerous. That profession makes secrecy both armour and burden. When violence occurs near her, capability supplies an accusation before anyone asks about choice. Etrata has survived by accepting the fear attached to her name, but the Karlov Manor case shows how easily that fear can be used by somebody who knows the city wants an efficient answer.
She appears bound to Teysa’s murder yet cannot remember choosing or performing it. The gap is not innocence by itself; Etrata knows better than anyone that minds and scenes can be altered. Proft’s refusal to close the case gives her room to investigate her own lost agency. Their partnership is tense because he treats danger as a puzzle and she treats it as a force already moving toward them. Each approach becomes safer when the other is present. His theory needs her knowledge of the undercity; her instincts need evidence capable of surviving public scrutiny.
As the attacks continue, Etrata repeatedly meets people whose actions have been bent by an outside will. Her psychic talents can break a fugue or project the fear needed to interrupt an assailant without confusing that intervention for justice. The pattern changes her position in the case. She is not merely clearing her name; she is recognising the method used against her in every new body turned into an instrument. That makes the investigation personal without making it blind.
The confrontation with Oba completes the reversal. Oba’s grief over Selesnya’s losses is real, but she claims the right to decide who must pay and whose body may carry out the sentence. Etrata helps Kaya and the Agency contain her, acting after coercion rather than through it. Ravnica will not stop reading her as an assassin, and she has not become harmless. What changes is the story attached to that danger: Etrata proves that a person is more than the skill another power can exploit.
