Why Geldan matters

Geldan grows up among Adagia's beauty and becomes skilled at locating, stealing and trading rare objects. The work never produces independence. Every job creates another favour, every rescue another obligation, until Solidbodies Research can threaten to sell her debt to professional hunters. She accepts an infiltration mission into the Uthros Combine because it appears to be the final transaction between service and freedom.

With Rezint beside her and Monoist pressure suits around them, Geldan descends through refuelling yards into the gas giant's secret interior. The installation is built from cloudsculpted passages, liquid metal and permissions nobody outside the Combine should possess. Their instructions require only a sensor reading from a sealed door. Geldan nevertheless pockets a decorative object and dreams of a private museum where beauty finally belongs to her.

A psychological pull strengthens as they approach the core. Rezint reads fragments that suggest a deity or world-eater and recognises the compulsion as danger. Geldan interprets the same evidence as proof of value. She disconnects the corporate instruments, destroys the modest treasure already in hand and opens the door so the discovery can be hers alone.

Beyond it lies the corpse or remnant of a reality-shaping titan. Its presence translates fear into the form most capable of captivating the viewer. Geldan kneels before the nightmare and imagines becoming its chosen material. Debt did not merely make her greedy; it taught her to equate possession with the absence of control. The thing inside Uthros wins by offering a possession so absolute that it possesses her instead.
