Why Helga matters

Helga grows up in Pondside among frogfolk who expect augury to provide a clear path. Her visions do not arrive cleanly. Patterns in water pull her attention, her hand fills a journal with images before she understands them and ordinary chores vanish behind questions nobody else can see. What might be a gift therefore feels like evidence that she cannot manage useful work. Training under King Glarb in Fountainport deepens the shame: his impatience and unstable prophecies leave Helga convinced that failing his method means she has failed magic itself.

Maha’s attack forces vision into action. Helga survives the Night Owl’s destruction of Pondside and could remain hidden until the danger moves on. Instead she follows the creek toward Goodhill to warn whoever might be next, arriving exhausted and covered in mud. Mabel believes both the warning and the frightened seer who delivers it. That trust begins a company of animalfolk whose skills do not fit one heroic mould. Helga is not suddenly fearless; she moves while afraid because the possible future contains people she can still help.

Across Valley, her augury becomes useful precisely because it is incomplete. Images point toward Calamity Beasts, betrayals and routes without supplying a convenient instruction. Mabel asks what Helga sees and helps turn possibility into a shared decision. Every companion adds local knowledge, force or nerve that the vision lacks. The arrangement gives Helga a healthier measure of competence: magic need not solve the whole crisis to change what the group can notice before it is too late.

Returning to Fountainport brings her before Glarb and the voice she has carried inside her own doubt. When the king belittles her and traps the party, Mabel’s belief gives Helga a reason to test her power instead of accepting his verdict. She helps break his control and continues toward the threat destabilising Valley. By the end, her greatest transformation is not certainty. Helga still sees branching futures and reasons to worry. She has learned that caution can travel beside courage, and that an imperfect warning offered in time may save an entire community.
