A visiting professor calling himself Ral Zarek invites Jilesa and flash artist Esmun on a confidential expedition. Her lumimancy and talent for finding secrets are precisely what he needs. The promise of a future exposé lets her accept restrictions that remove the editor, colleagues and witnesses who might ask why a faculty member requires students for a sealed vault.
At the Vaults of Turrau, Jilesa maps a lethal maze by repeatedly sending inklings along possible paths. She then identifies the hidden volume the professor cannot locate alone. Every success tightens the trap: competence carries them deeper while exhaustion reduces the choices available when his deception becomes visible.
The impostor takes the book and leaves the students among ancient guardians. Jilesa’s ambition is not the flaw that deserves punishment; manipulation is. Her hard lesson concerns process. Journalism becomes safer and more truthful through accountability, and any source demanding total secrecy may be trying to prevent the story from observing them in return.
