Kadrik
Eumidian vanguard who discovers a purpose outside their assigned function
Kadrik deserts a life they never wanted, saves a stranger on impulse and learns that being made for one function does not forbid loving another.
Profile
Why Kadrik matters
Kadrik hatches into Evendo's second Eumidian vanguard generation, too late for the first dramatic work of terrasymbiosis and early enough to inherit its repetitive labour. Their form, instincts and union-mind expectations all point toward recovering dormant seed pods. Kadrik is easily bored, performs badly and mistakes a cruel joke about functional recycling for a genuine death sentence.
Flight into Evendo's thawing wilderness becomes less liberation than hunger, cold and pursuit by a huge predator Kadrik calls Gobbler. They find a Kav stasis pod containing the human Noz and initially calculate its edible value. Curiosity and conscience reverse the decision. Kadrik returns, fights the creature with improvised tools and loses a fungal foot that immediately begins growing back.
The rescued human brings evidence of old Kav military preparations, but his more personal gift matters just as much. Noz draws for pleasure and explains that people can fall in love with work they were not designed to perform. The idea unsettles Kadrik's assumption that a useful life must match the function assigned at hatching. Evendo's collective remains home, yet home no longer has to determine every future action.
Kadrik ends the encounter using Noz's pencil to draw rather than recover another pod. The small act does not resolve the threat to Evendo or erase responsibility to the brood. It creates room inside both. Their story turns Sothera's vast conflict into an intimate question: whether a society built through adaptation can also let an individual change.
