Why Rhain matters

Rhain lives in Lorwyn with scars left by a boggart curse. The mark continues inward, slowly hardening the heart that survived the original attack. Balms delay the damage but cannot cure it, and shame teaches him to keep both his appearance and prognosis out of view.

Cerys enters his life through a letter intended for her uncle. Rhain answers because the correspondence offers companionship without exposure. Their botanical exchange becomes the best part of his days, but his silence about the illness turns privacy into a decision that also denies Cerys the chance to respond.

When she asks directly, Rhain admits he is dying and prepares a final letter. He tells her that affection grew without an image and that losing their exchange hurts more than death. The confession arrives almost too late: Cerys is already crossing the aurora with dawnglove.

Rhain wakes healed and sees Cerys struggling under Lorwyn's influence. Instead of believing the insults forced from her, he recognises the intention embodied by her journey. He carries her back toward Shadowmoor, now strong enough to return the care that saved him and honest enough to let himself be known.
