Why Ruby matters

Ruby knows the roads around Edgewall and Dunbarrow well enough to recognise trouble before it announces itself. When she meets Kellan asking strangers about witches, she sees an eager boy carrying fae gifts he cannot yet use and warns him away from a victim of the Wicked Slumber. Her own reason for entering the Wilds is more immediate: her brother Peter has vanished. Kellan offers help, and Ruby agrees to guide him partly because their searches may cross and partly because somebody has to keep his idea of heroism from getting him killed.

The partnership begins with unequal experience. Ruby can track, improvise and turn an apple into a weapon accurate enough to shame a trained archer, while Kellan is still discovering what his enchanted hilts do. Yet she does not simply lead him. Agatha’s cottage, the Wolf Knight and the hazards left by the Phyrexian invasion force both travellers to trust the other’s instincts. Ruby’s scepticism protects Kellan from the literal reading of fairy tales; his willingness to help Peter ensures that her private search does not disappear beneath Talion’s grander bargain.

Hylda’s frozen bridge reveals Ruby at her strongest. The cold defeats Kellan and every sensible calculation tells Ruby to retreat, but she carries him onward because he would do the same for her. There is no audience and no certainty that either of them will survive. That loyalty reaches the lonely witch more effectively than a weapon could. Ruby’s choice becomes a lesson Kellan cannot learn from a heroic script: courage is not confidence in victory, but continuing to care when failure looks inevitable.

At Castle Ardenvale, Ruby helps bring the wandering quest into Eldraine’s struggle over the Wicked Slumber. She stands beside Kellan while kings, witches and fae bargains compete to decide what the Realm needs. After the curse breaks, Kellan receives Oko’s name and follows the Omenpaths alone. Ruby’s part of the road remains complete rather than secondary. She found Peter, helped wake a kingdom and showed a would-be hero that companionship is an obligation between equals, not a supporting role assigned by his story.
