Sami

Wildcat captain who makes solidarity their sharpest survival trick

Sami captains the battered Seriema with nerve, invention and a habit of protecting every stray who crosses their airlock, even when the rescue makes the next escape nearly impossible.

Profile

Why Sami matters

Sami learned space from the underside: repair work, debris fields and jobs whose contracts mattered less than the people expected to survive them. They eventually won command of the Seriema, a ship held together by expertise, audacity and affection. Bad fortunes cost most of the crew, while the disappearance of their weftwalking cat Mirri turned every new commission into part income and part search. First mate Tannuk remained because Sami treats a crew as a promise rather than an asset.

Tezzeret's recovery job sends the Seriema to the apparently empty colony of Sigma's Reach. Sami discovers a black Endstone there and survives memories that keep changing around it. Each use of the artifact offers an efficient route forward by making someone else's loss inevitable. Sami distrusts that bargain. Their preferred tools are engineering, social insight and a willingness to ask rivals for help before deciding that violence is the only language available.

That instinct is tested on Kavaron. Sami interrupts the flight to rescue twenty-four irradiated Kav, shelters Alpharael and later accepts Haliya under the same guest-right even though both attract armies. When the Sunstar Free Company burns Taro-duend, Sami refuses to turn the dead into an excuse for surrender. At Infinite Guideline they decline formal protection that might make civilians targets, then tell Pinnacle the truth while the rest of the crew steals a warp ferry.

The escape succeeds because Sami understands institutions and ships well enough to create one unavoidable choice: open the eternity column or let the Seriema collide with the station. Beyond Sothera they reunite with Mirri and face the Endstone's maker without pretending the expedition was clean. Sami's leadership is not innocence. It is the repeated decision that nobody aboard becomes disposable, especially when the universe insists disposal would be convenient.
