Why Serra matters

Serra was a human healer with the vast power of an ancient planeswalker. She created an artificial realm shaped by white mana, bringing followers into a peaceful home guarded by angels. Benevolence was something she tried to give a physical place.

Urza found shelter there, and Serra and her angels healed him. His Phyrexian pursuers also found the refuge. Their attack corrupted it, and Serra departed rather than remaining in a world whose promise had been so deeply damaged.

Radiant inherited its guardianship, but Phyrexian manipulation turned protection into persecution. The Weatherlight evacuated those willing to leave before Urza collapsed the failing realm into a powerstone. That became fuel for a ship, not an undamaged sanctuary hidden inside an ordinary gem.

In her own travels, Serra also became a caretaker of Ulgrotha with Feroz, whose ban sought to exclude dangerous outsiders. She eventually died at Sursi on Dominaria, dispersing her essence into the land. Her death and the realm's destruction were separate events.

Her remaining power protects Sursi's cathedral, where angels can still appear. The church built around her honours a dead planeswalker, not proof of a returned goddess. Her teachings persist through people and institutions that must decide how to practise them.
