Zareth San
Trickster who questions who gets to decide Zendikar's future
Zareth San hides a serious attachment to Zendikar behind charm and theft. His loyalty to Akiri and suspicion of Nahiri make him both an imperfect protector and an early critic of the promised cure.
Profile
Why Zareth San matters
Zareth San is a merfolk rogue accustomed to surviving through resourcefulness, charm and taking what others leave unguarded. Sea Gate's reconstruction gives him an unexpected reason to stay: the people working beside him. Akiri, Kaza and Orah become more than useful companions. Belonging does not remove his instinct for self-preservation, but it gives him something that instinct cannot protect on its own. Akiri later mourns him explicitly as her love, not merely a lost expedition companion.
On the Umara, Zareth jokes, improvises and shares the memories of war that Akiri carries. The serpent at Magosi forces his loyalty into a terrible shape. He engineers an escape that draws Akiri away, and both live while the caravan is lost. He understands the cost well enough to grieve it. His choice is neither a clean act of heroism nor evidence that he cares for nobody else.
When Nahiri offers a restored Zendikar, Zareth asks who would fit inside it. He challenges her through a game, steals the key and loses that contest to her stonecraft. In private, he seeks a buyer who would keep the Core unused. The scheme suits a rogue, but its motive is more than profit: a world remade around ancient fortresses might erase the place people like him have built.
Zareth accompanies Akiri into Murasa despite his distrust. Nahiri's activation of the Core kills him, turning the danger he questioned into a loss that cannot be negotiated away. His role continues through Akiri's refusal to excuse what happened. Read alongside the larger dispute, his story supplies a necessary question: saving a world for its people requires asking those people what kind of future they can live in.
