Five lives test whether glory is a destination, a performance or the courage to choose a different path

Ranar Chooses Duty

Ranar crosses Istfell in search of deserved glory, then learns that the humility to guard forgotten souls matters more than entry to Starnheim.

Ranar awakens dead in Istfell, the realm assigned to uncelebrated souls. He accepts the judgment without surrendering purpose and spends ages helping the forgotten. When a living youth called Bjorn asks for his strength on a path toward Starnheim, the mission seems to confirm that Ranar's delayed heroic reward has finally arrived.

Their quest tears through Istfell's rulers, while Ranar's unease grows faster than the list of victories. Bjorn is Egon, god of death, using disguise and Ranar's hunger for recognition to attack rivals and force an entrance into Starnheim. The scale of a deed has hidden its emptiness; Ranar followed because the promised ending matched the story he wanted about himself.

Firja stops Egon and offers Ranar the judgment he thought he sought. He instead admits his mistake and asks to remain where his steadiness can protect others from the same failure. Restored as Istfell's guardian, he loses much of the cycle's memory but not its direction. Duty without applause becomes the glory he can actually sustain.
