Angrath

Flame-chained father whose rage begins and ends with freedom

Angrath looks like a monster and often fights like one, but his fury on Ixalan came from fourteen stolen years away from his daughters. Freedom is the one treasure he will not negotiate away.

Profile

Why Angrath matters

Angrath is a minotaur planeswalker, blacksmith and father whose magic heats iron and turns chains into instruments of force. Restlessness already made long voyages natural to him; confinement made that temperament explosive. His intimidating size, furnace heat and talent for dragging enemies against their will created the reputation of a brutal pirate. That reputation is accurate in battle, but incomplete everywhere that matters to him.

The Immortal Sun trapped Angrath on Ixalan for fourteen years. Every attempt to planeswalk failed, keeping him from the daughters waiting on another plane. He raided the Sun Empire’s coast, gathered a crew through fear and searched for the artifact responsible. When Huatli’s spark awakened during their fight, Angrath recognised what had happened before she did. He offered cooperation badly, with threats and insults, yet he also gave her the first honest explanation of the cage around them.

Their alliance on the road to Orazca was combustible. Angrath mocked Huatli’s faith in imperial titles and argued that history belonged to more people than whoever reached the top of an empire. He fought every rival for the Immortal Sun, not because its gold or authority interested him, but because removing it meant going home. Once the artifact vanished, Angrath celebrated his restored freedom, cursed everyone within hearing and planeswalked away at once.

He later appeared among the planeswalkers trapped on Ravnica during Nicol Bolas’s war, turning his coercive magic against the invading Dreadhorde rather than serving it. The contradiction suits him: Angrath can seize control in a fight while hating the power that cages a life. Lorewalkers keeps the centre of his story clear. Rage is the surface. Beneath it stands a parent who measures every grand cause against the years it might steal from his family.
