Why Kiora matters

Kiora grew up among Zendikar’s merfolk with an appetite for horizons other people considered warnings. When a sea serpent attacked her and her sister Turi, Kiora drew the creature away and was swallowed. Terror ignited her spark before the jaws could end her life. Returning months later mattered more than discovering the Multiverse: Turi had kept waiting, and Kiora learned that every departure created a debt to come home.

The Eldrazi gave that debt a terrifying scale. Kiora searched other planes for krakens, leviathans and ocean magic powerful enough to fight world-eaters. On Theros she passed herself off as an aspect of Thassa and as the legendary navigator Callaphe, using faith and borrowed names to reach Arixmethes. Her confrontation with the sea god ended without the army she wanted, but Kiora escaped carrying Thassa’s bident as proof that even divinity could be challenged.

Back on Zendikar, Kiora brought the bident and the greatest creatures she could summon into the defence of Sea Gate. She fought beside Gideon’s coalition while remaining suspicious of plans built by outsiders. The assault on Ulamog broke her forces and killed ancient sea creatures she had treated as the answer to everything. Grief and fury drove her from the battlefield before the Gatewatch found the method that destroyed Ulamog and Kozilek.

Kiora later answered the crisis on Ravnica, but she has never become a comfortable institutional hero. Her strength is the refusal to accept that size, age or divine reputation makes an enemy untouchable. Her weakness grows from the same root: she can mistake daring for preparation and trophies for solutions. Lorewalkers follows her as a protector whose largest summons cannot spare her the harder work of trust.
