Why Rhys matters
Rhys helped defeat Oona and entered the new age carrying knowledge few others possessed. Maralen trusted him because he understood both the old queen's cruelty and the cost of stopping her. Their friendship became a magical agreement that sustained his life far beyond its natural span.
The pact makes vigilance inseparable from affection. Rhys carries a moonglove-coated dagger and promises to use it if Maralen begins becoming Oona. Neither wants that ending, but both fear the alternative enough to make one person's death the price of protecting an entire plane.
When the Pendulum Year slips out of balance, Maralen hides visions that she cannot explain. Rhys reads secrecy and transformation through the exact terms of his obligation. He poisons her, then recognises that obedience has confused change with corruption. His remorse does not undo the wound, but it keeps him beside her while others search for a cure.
Maralen survives and the old binding falls away. Without its magic, Rhys finally reaches the end deferred for decades. He accepts mortality with gratitude rather than panic, thanks the friend who no longer needs his guard and dissolves into flowers before Eirdu. His last act turns duty back into freely chosen care.
