Four Strixhaven students wake the night and force a divided world to decide whether balance means sameness or coexistence

Lorwyn Eclipsed

An accidental Omenpath strands four students on Lorwyn-Shadowmoor. Their search for home wakes Isilu, exposes an elven coup and gives Maralen one chance to rule without Oona's shadow.

Why this story matters

The route in brief

Lorwyn-Shadowmoor no longer waits centuries to exchange endless day for endless night. Since Oona fell, both aspects occupy the same landscape in moving patches. Crossing an aurora can reshape body, memory and temperament, yet neither side is the false version. The plane has become an argument made physical: identity can contain contradictions without surrendering to one of them.

Abigale, Sanar, Kirol and Tam discover that argument by accident. A faerie lures them through an Omenpath during a Strixhaven field lesson, and Sanar wakes Isilu, the sleeping incarnation of night. As Shadowmoor spreads behind the great elemental, the students lose one another and follow different guides toward Glen Elendra.

The disturbance arrives while Maralen is already fighting a private crisis. She was created from Oona but has built a life and a conscience of her own. Rhys remains beside her under a pact that requires him to kill her if Oona returns through her. High Perfect Morcant turns their fear into an opportunity to destroy Isilu and restore elven control.

What saves the plane is not the victory of light over darkness. It is the reunion of Eirdu and Isilu, the refusal of several people to obey inherited roles and Maralen's acceptance that change need not erase her. The students return to Arcavios with Lluwen, carrying a lesson that will matter when Secrets of Strixhaven asks them to trust one another again.

Story Chapters

  1. The Omenpath Under the Flowers

A routine botany lesson becomes a planar crossing when four students follow a faerie, fall through an uncharted Omenpath and wake the sleeping Isilu.

Dina brings first-year students into Harrier's Wood to collect magically neutral snarlflowers. Abigale, Sanar, Kirol and Tam quickly fall into their familiar rhythm: caution, curiosity, teasing and practical correction. When Sanar sees a strange blue faerie, the promise of discovery pulls all four deeper into the forest.

A root trips them into a prismatic passage. They land beneath a sky with only one sun and realise Arcavios is gone. A nearby dolmen divides open daylight from perfect night, and the paintings inside show two vast beings exchanging watch over the world. At the cavern's centre sleeps the moon-crowned Isilu.

Sanar touches the elemental before his friends can stop him. Isilu wakes in terror and sends Shadowmoor pouring across the meadow. The fleeing students have not summoned an evil power; they have disturbed one half of a living balance. That distinction will take them most of the journey to understand.

  2. A Queen Afraid of Her Reflection

As Isilu walks, Maralen sees signs of Oona's return while Ajani answers Liliana's request to recover the students missing from Strixhaven.

At Glen Elendra, Maralen governs from a court where day and night mingle. Her growing power should confirm that she has become the plane's steward, but visions of Oona make every change feel like evidence against her. Rhys remains friend, witness and appointed executioner, carrying the poisoned dagger their pact may force him to use.

Eirdu, the incarnation of day, leaves the palace grounds as Isilu begins to move. The balance that made Glen Elendra a refuge shifts with it. A disguised faerie continues to haunt Maralen's rooms, nudging her fear toward the conclusion that Oona is reclaiming the life once fashioned from her.

On Arcavios, Ajani visits Liliana and learns that four students disappeared during Dina's lesson. The rescue gives him a direct route back into a world connected to Oko's past. While the students search for local help, Ajani follows through the Omenpaths with knowledge they do not possess and history he would rather not revisit.

  3. The People on Both Sides

Goldmeadow's defenders teach the students that an aurora changes motives as well as appearances, turning neighbours into frightened opponents without making either nature unreal.

The students reach Goldmeadow and meet Brigid, an archer who remembers the struggle against Oona but prefers the ordinary work of training a watch. She directs them toward Maralen. Before they can leave safely, Isilu's advancing night reaches the settlement and turns familiar citizens into their Shadowmoor selves.

The transformed kithkin fight from fear and fierce communal instinct. Brigid is pulled across the boundary and immediately defends the people she had opposed moments earlier. Abigale recognises that the attackers are not corrupted copies. They are frightened versions of the same people, responding to a world that suddenly makes different dangers feel absolute.

The group escapes toward the Wanderwine, now aware that every moving border can change an ally's priorities. Tam insists Maralen remains their best hope of reaching home. The route east looks simple in steady sunlight, but Isilu is walking behind them and the border refuses to remain where anyone expects it.

  4. Four Routes Through One World

The Wanderwine and Gilt-Leaf split the friends apart, carrying each student toward a different witness to Lorwyn-Shadowmoor's unstable balance.

A sudden threat scatters the students in the forest. Abigale falls into a tributary and is swept toward the Wanderwine, where merrow rescue her and bring her to the ageing schoolmaster Sygg. His daylight life is built around family and teaching, while the returning night could strip both from his memory.

Kirol is captured by Lluwen and delivered to High Perfect Morcant. The elven ruler sees an outsider who can cross the aurora without changing and orders them to gather dawnglove from Shadowmoor. Tam and Sanar continue to Glen Elendra, choosing the warning over the search for their missing friends.

The separation reveals the plane more clearly than a single tour could. Each community has adapted to living beside its other nature, but old hierarchies still exploit the uncertainty. Maralen receives Tam and Sanar just as Oona's signs intensify, while Rhys mistakes her secrecy for proof that their feared ending has arrived.

  5. Poison, Pilgrims and a Brother

Rhys fulfils his terrible promise, Ashling leads the survivors toward Isilu and Kirol's refusal turns an elven errand into open defiance.

Rhys strikes Maralen with moonglove, not from hatred but because the magic binding him interprets her transformation as the condition she once described. Tam and Sanar join Maralen and Ashling on the Wanderwine, heading toward Isilu while the poison advances. Ashling has learned to cross between flamekin and rimekin without surrendering her memory.

In Gilt-Leaf, Kirol retrieves the dawnglove but refuses to return for more when cinders close around the grove. Lluwen finally rejects Morcant's command rather than sacrifice a stranger. Ajani arrives in time to extract them, and Lluwen follows the group that offers protection without demanding obedience.

Shadowmoor overtakes the river and forces Maralen's party onto land. There the advancing night reveals the faerie who lured the students: Oko, Maralen's lost brother, returned in another form. His presence connects her private terror to a family created by Oona, but it also proves that an origin does not dictate what an heir must become.

  6. The Coup Under the Eclipse

Morcant drives elves against Isilu while Oko, Ajani and the students race to recover the one medicine capable of saving Maralen.

Morcant advances behind captured daylight, presenting domination as restoration. Her target is Isilu, whose existence prevents Lorwyn from becoming the fixed sunlit order she believes the elves deserve. Kithkin gather beneath the elemental's protection, and Ashling explains that the night sharpens qualities already present rather than inventing a separate soul.

Oko recognises Maralen as his sister only after Rhys has poisoned her. Kirol identifies the answer hidden inside Morcant's plan: dawnglove, the Shadowmoor counterpart to moonglove, may neutralise the toxin. While Ajani tends Tam's wounds, Oko searches for Morcant and the students move through the battle to take back the vial.

Lluwen turns on his former ruler at the decisive moment. Sanar's improvised attack creates the opening, Kirol secures the medicine and Oko carries it to Maralen. Their success comes from people crossing assigned boundaries: student and teacher, Lorwyn and Shadowmoor, elf and outsider, sibling and stranger.

  7. Dawn Without Erasure

Eirdu's return restores the pendulum, Maralen survives with a changed identity and the students leave Lorwyn with one unexpected new classmate.

Eirdu arrives beside Abigale and pushes daylight back across the battlefield. The two incarnation gods recognise one another, and their meeting restores motion to a cycle that had become dangerously one-sided. The combatants recover themselves not because night is defeated, but because neither aspect can occupy the whole world alone.

Dawnglove saves Maralen and changes her pact with Rhys. She wakes able to feel twilight and dawn together, freed from the certainty that Oona must replace her. Rhys is released from the magic sustaining his life and chooses a natural ending. His body becomes flowers, leaving Maralen grief, freedom and a final proof that love can complete a duty without remaining chained to it.

Oko refuses the throne but accepts Maralen as family. Ajani leads the students through Shandalar toward Arcavios, and Lluwen asks to follow because returning to Morcant would mean death. Lorwyn-Shadowmoor keeps its contradictions; the visitors carry one of its people home. Liliana's punishment waits, but so does the friendship that this journey forged.
