Urza
Artificer, planeswalker and architect of Dominaria’s longest war
Urza helped save Dominaria from Phyrexia, but hero is too simple a word for a man who repeatedly converted lives, nations and centuries into components of his revenge. His inventions shaped the Multiverse as profoundly as the enemy he opposed.
Profile
Why Urza matters
Urza and his brother Mishra began as archaeologists of the Thran past. Discovery of the Mightstone and Weakstone turned curiosity into possession, then possession into a war that recruited entire nations to a family grievance. Each brother answered the other with larger machines and fewer limits. At Argoth, Urza activated the Sylex rather than accept defeat; the blast ended the war, ignited his spark and devastated Dominaria.
The final battle revealed how deeply Phyrexia had changed Mishra. Urza carried that horror into a campaign against Yawgmoth that lasted millennia. He founded academies, manipulated bloodlines and built weapons whose makers often understood only one piece of the design. Long preparation made him effective, but it also allowed him to describe almost any cruelty as a necessary cost someone else would pay.
Urza assembled the Nine Titans for an assault on Phyrexia and created the Legacy around the Weatherlight, its crew, artifacts and Karn. His direct invasion failed because he still believed control and superior planning could master everything. The people he had treated as pieces were the ones who finally completed the weapon and defended Dominaria when Phyrexia overlaid Rath onto the plane.
At the end, Urza’s severed head and the powerstones that had become his eyes were joined to Karn as part of the Legacy Weapon. Yawgmoth was destroyed and Urza died within the victory he had prepared. His legacy remains deliberately uncomfortable: Dominaria may have needed his knowledge, but needing the result does not absolve the methods that made generations live inside one man’s vendetta.
