Urza prepared a perfect weapon. Dominaria survived because imperfect people chose one another.
The Weatherlight Saga and the Phyrexian Invasion
Yawgmoth turns Rath into the bridgehead for Phyrexia’s invasion of Dominaria. The Weatherlight crew and the Coalition complete Urza’s scattered Legacy, destroy Yawgmoth and leave Karn carrying both victory and a newly awakened spark.
Why this story matters
The route in brief
The original Phyrexian invasion was not a sudden attack. It was the conclusion of plans built across generations. Yawgmoth shaped Rath into a delivery system, seeded agents through Dominaria and waited for an opening. Urza responded on the same scale, constructing a Legacy whose pieces included people who were never given a complete explanation of the role assigned to them.
The Weatherlight crew brought those pieces together through loyalty rather than design. Sisay, Gerrard, Karn, Hanna, Mirri, Tahngarth, Squee and their companions disagreed, failed and suffered losses Urza’s plans treated as acceptable. Their journey through Rath and Mercadia made the approaching invasion visible before Dominaria’s nations were ready to act as one.
When Rath overlaid onto Dominaria, preparation met reality. The Coalition survived because cultures with different histories coordinated under impossible pressure, while Urza’s direct assault on Phyrexia collapsed under betrayal and temptation. The Legacy Weapon worked only after the people inside the plan made choices its architect could not command.

Urza builds the Legacy
Urza spread his answer to Phyrexia across artifacts, bloodlines and institutions so no single defeat could destroy it.
After the Brothers’ War, Urza devoted millennia to understanding and defeating Phyrexia. He created Karn as a silver golem able to travel through time, established the Tolarian Academy and supported generations of research. Catastrophic experiments showed that preparing for one disaster could create others, yet he continued to treat scale as an argument for secrecy.
The Legacy was less a conventional weapon than a system of interdependent parts. Artifacts gathered across different ages, the Weatherlight itself, Karn and the engineered heritage that produced Gerrard were meant to converge at the right moment. Dividing the design protected it from capture, but it also kept participants from understanding what had been made of their lives.
Urza’s foresight mattered. Without long preparation, Dominaria would have faced Yawgmoth with no answer capable of reaching him. The same preparation revealed his central failure: he could imagine centuries of mechanics more easily than the autonomy of people expected to complete them.

The rescue on Rath
Sisay’s abduction drew the Weatherlight into an artificial plane designed to become the invasion’s bridgehead.
Volrath kidnapped Captain Sisay to draw Gerrard back toward the destiny he had rejected. The Weatherlight travelled to Rath with a crew tied together by old friendship, unfinished grief and the need to recover more than one captive. Gerrard’s conflict with Volrath made the mission personal, but the Stronghold revealed a threat beyond their rivalry.
Rath had been assembled from stolen pieces of other worlds and held together by flowstone. Its rulers changed, its populations were displaced and its fortresses manufactured the conditions for invasion. Phyrexia did not merely occupy the plane; it had designed Rath to be consumed when its strategic purpose arrived.
The crew recovered Sisay, Karn and other prisoners, but rescue carried permanent losses. Mirri died, Crovax completed his fall toward becoming Rath’s evincar and Ertai was left behind during the escape. Surviving the Stronghold did not restore the earlier crew. It gave the people who remained knowledge of what Dominaria was about to face.

A ship finds its way home
Stranded on Mercadia, the crew rebuilt alliances and uncovered betrayal while the invasion timetable continued without them.
The damaged Weatherlight escaped Rath but reached Mercadia rather than Dominaria. Its crew entered a world whose inverted mountain, trading powers and hidden histories complicated every attempt to repair the ship and return home. Delay mattered because Phyrexia’s preparation did not pause while the defenders found their bearings.
Volrath had escaped with them in disguise, using the identity of Takara to remain near the crew. His presence turned old mistrust into immediate danger and ended Starke’s life. The deception proved how readily Phyrexian strategy used relationships as access points rather than relying only on visible armies.
The Weatherlight eventually returned with new allies and a clearer understanding of its purpose. The journey had not made the crew obedient components of the Legacy. It had made them better at judging which promises deserved loyalty, a distinction that would matter when Urza’s authority failed.

Rath overlays Dominaria
Phyrexia converted its artificial staging plane into a single mass arrival across the world it intended to conquer.
The invasion began when Rath was overlaid onto Dominaria. Strongholds, armies and stolen terrain appeared across the plane, bypassing the slow limitations that normally separated worlds. Places already shaped by Rath’s construction became immediate fronts in a war that reached multiple continents at once.
Dominaria answered with the Coalition, an alliance spanning peoples and nations that had often treated one another as rivals. The Weatherlight became both weapon and connective tissue, moving between battles while commanders tried to create strategy from local crises. Cooperation was not sentimental unity; it was the difficult practice of sharing survival.
Teferi refused Urza’s demand that Zhalfir and Shiv be spent inside his plan. He phased both lands out of time, protecting their inhabitants from invasion but creating a separation he could not later reverse. The choice saved lives immediately and became a wound that lasted beyond the war.

The Nine Titans fail
Urza led old planeswalkers into Phyrexia, where betrayal and his own fascination broke the assault.
Urza gathered nine planeswalkers and equipped them for a direct strike at Phyrexia. Freyalise, Lord Windgrace and other oldwalkers carried soul bombs through the plane’s layers. The mission demonstrated power on a scale ordinary armies could not approach, but its design still depended on Urza anticipating every betrayal.
Tevesh Szat murdered members of the group and was killed in turn, his essence used to power Urza’s weapons. The response had been prepared in advance, showing both Urza’s tactical brilliance and the moral trap of a plan that recruited treachery because it could be converted into fuel.
Near Yawgmoth’s centre, Urza’s hatred gave way to awe at Phyrexian artifice. Gerrard was drawn into the same confrontation, and the two were made to fight. The architect who had demanded sacrifices from everyone else could not complete his own mission. His assault left the final defence to the crew operating outside his control.

The Legacy chooses Karn
Gerrard, Urza and the Weatherlight became the final components of a weapon that destroyed Yawgmoth and transformed Karn.
Yawgmoth entered Dominaria as a vast death cloud, overwhelming conventional resistance and turning the final battle into a struggle against the presence of Phyrexia’s god. Gerrard recovered Urza’s severed head and returned to the Weatherlight, where the scattered components of the Legacy could finally be joined.
The weapon required losses no victory could disguise. Hanna and many other defenders were already dead. Gerrard and Urza became part of the final release, while the Weatherlight and collected artifacts focused their power through Karn. The people once described as pieces made the decisive act together.
The Legacy Weapon destroyed Yawgmoth and ended the invasion. Its combined powerstones transferred Urza’s spark to Karn, transforming the silver golem into a planeswalker. Dominaria survived scarred, the Weatherlight Saga closed around absent friends, and Karn inherited both freedom and responsibility from a plan built before he could consent to either.
