WHAT MAKES SOMEONE RETURN
Dominaria: Skyships and Departures
The Weatherlight draws Gerrard back through a kidnapping and uneasy bargains. In a separate voyage, Kellan Boldt learns that escaping disaster can mean leaving a planned future behind.
Why this story matters
The route in brief
A ship offers movement without settling why its passengers move. For the Weatherlight's crew, returning to a familiar deck can reopen a destiny deliberately left behind. For a young mage on another vessel, survival can make the destination he once prized less important than the world ahead.
The opening chapter supplies the Weatherlight's earlier relationships before two accounts follow Sisay's abduction and the bargains surrounding its aftermath. The last chapter is a separate Dominaria adventure, not another recruitment into Gerrard's crew.
Kellan Boldt is not the modern Kellan encountered along the Omenpaths. Likewise, the story called Maelstrom here concerns the Weatherlight and does not describe Alara's Conflux. Those distinctions keep similarly named people and events from becoming connections they never had.

Before the return: Gerrard's abandoned obligation
Sisay and Karn belong to a destiny Gerrard resists, making the captain's abduction more than an ordinary rescue assignment.
Gerrard had learned that the artifacts called the Legacy, including the Weatherlight, belonged to a destiny he did not want. Losing Rofellos and discovering how much Sisay had withheld helped drive him away from the ship and from Hanna.
Sisay's faith in him survived his refusal. Karn also belonged to the Legacy, serving as its keeper and Gerrard's guardian even after Vuel stole and scattered the collection. Recovering its pieces was already part of the captain's work.
Those relationships explain why her kidnapping could pull Gerrard back. This is background to the departure, not a claim that every later rescue had already succeeded. Choosing to return meant facing a personal history as well as crossing a dangerous threshold.

A missing captain brings Gerrard back aboard
Starke offers information and seeks his daughter's rescue, while Sisay's capture turns Gerrard's refusal into an urgent return.
Starke offered Sisay information about Volrath and the stolen Legacy in exchange for help freeing his daughter. The bargain reached back into Gerrard's childhood and forward toward Rath, making the captain's rescue plans vulnerable to an unreliable guide.
The account moves between that earlier exchange and the consequence awaiting Gerrard. Sisay had been taken, and Tahngarth needed him back. Gerrard's life ashore could not make the missing captain cease to matter.
He returned to the Weatherlight rather than accept distance as an answer. The movement begins another commitment, not the completed recovery of Sisay or the Legacy. Starke's need and his capacity to mislead remain part of the danger travelling with it.

A shared enemy does not make Starke trustworthy
The Weatherlight isolates Maraxus, but Starke kills him to protect his own secrets and remains a necessary, suspect guide.
Starke had drawn Crovax toward Rath through a promise involving Selenia, leaving consequences he preferred not to explain. Capture by Maraxus put him in another immediate danger, one from which bargaining and escape offered only temporary relief.
The Weatherlight's arrival separated Maraxus from the surrounding fighters whose presence strengthened him. Gerrard pressed the advantage and offered surrender, but Starke killed the mercenary from behind before he could expose more of the guide's role.
Having defeated the enemy, Gerrard still needed directions to Rath. That necessity did not become trust. Sisay remained captive, and the rescue had not yet been achieved; the crew departed with someone whose usefulness and self-interest could not safely be treated as the same thing.

Another mage survives without keeping his original plan
Enthril vanishes after transforming the wreckage into a skyship, and Kellan Boldt chooses the wind instead of the academy.
On a separate voyage, Kellan Boldt expected study at the Tolarian Academy to complete his ambitions. Pirate attacks left him with the older ship mage Enthril, whose lessons included repairing the hull and conserving strength instead of commanding every problem away.
The Dire Waves and a vast sea creature destroyed their remaining safety. Losing his books and focus forced Boldt to recognise magic as a relationship he could enter rather than a formula guaranteeing control. Together the mages called the wreckage into a new form.
He awoke aboard a skyship, with Enthril gone and a signet ring left behind. Boldt let the vessel turn away from the academy. The escape changed his purpose without explaining the old mage's final fate.
