Karn
Silver golem, creator and keeper of a difficult legacy
Built as a tool in Urza's war, Karn became a compassionate person, a planeswalker and the creator of Mirrodin. His story is defined by the hard work of taking responsibility for what others made him do and for what his own creations became.
Profile
Why Karn matters
Urza created Karn from silver so the golem could survive experiments with time. He was intended to be an instrument, yet friendship and experience gave him a moral life far beyond his assigned purpose. An accidental death made him fear his own strength, and pacifism became an attempt to ensure that no command could turn him into a weapon again.
As part of the Weatherlight's Legacy, Karn helped end the first Phyrexian invasion and inherited the power to walk between planes. He used that freedom to create Argentum, an artificial world built with care and mathematical precision. When the world became Mirrodin, a trace of Phyrexian oil he had unknowingly carried there grew into a corruption that transformed his achievement into New Phyrexia.
Karn's guilt repeatedly made isolation look like responsibility. Venser gave his life and spark to free Karn from Phyrexian control, leaving the golem with another life he felt obliged to justify. He searched for a way to destroy New Phyrexia and recovered knowledge of the Sylex, but Norn's forces captured him before the final invasion.
When Zhalfir's arrival broke the Phyrexian armies, Karn remained behind to kill Elesh Norn himself. He would not ask another person to finish the consequence of his creation. Afterwards he spent the remnant of Venser's spark helping restore Ajani and Nissa. Karn emerged without planeswalking power, but with something more important than escape: a future no longer organised around avoiding his past.
