The route in brief

Modern Kamigawa is not a contest in which tradition belongs to the past and technology owns the future. Kami inhabit machines, ancient obligations govern neon cities and every faction offers a different boundary between invention and exploitation. The Imperial court restricts technology in the name of balance, while Futurists and Uprisers disagree over whether reform, separation or revolution can produce it.

Kaito enters that conflict through a promise older than his spark. As a palace child he befriended the emperor, witnessed a metal-armed intruder near Kyodai and refused the official silence that followed her disappearance. Himoto, a kami bound to his drone, gave him telekinetic focus and opened the Multiverse, but ten years of travel never converted loyalty into certainty.

The investigation brings three scales of danger together. Tezzeret exploits political resentment, Jin-Gitaxias treats Kamigawa’s spirits as experimental material and the Reality Chip links their work to an unstable planeswalker. Stopping the laboratory can protect a plane for one night while still allowing Phyrexia to carry the most important result away.

Tamiyo pays the price for that stolen result. Her capture proves that Phyrexia can compleat a planeswalker without extinguishing her spark, turning Kamigawa’s local victory into a warning for every world.

Story Chapters

  1. The girl behind the screen

    Kaito’s friendship with the emperor made a distant office personal, then turned her disappearance into a promise the palace could not contain.

    Kaito first spoke to the emperor without knowing her identity, treating the girl behind a screen as someone who might enjoy an honest story. Friendship continued through forbidden conversations and sparring lessons. Court rules demanded distance, but recognition survived beneath titles that allowed almost no part of her private self to be named.

    Tezzeret entered Kyodai’s chamber with a prototype device intended to influence the guardian kami. The experiment failed in its stated purpose and ignited the emperor’s spark. She vanished from Kamigawa without control over where the Blind Eternities carried her, leaving Kyodai distressed and the court without an explanation it could safely publish.

    Kaito saw enough to remember the stranger’s metal arm. Light-Paws treated the event as an Imperial matter, but silence felt to him like abandonment disguised as duty. He left Eiganjo determined to identify the intruder and return his friend, even when the palace no longer recognised that search as service.

  2. Himoto and the long search

    A kami joined Kaito through living technology, igniting the spark that expanded his investigation beyond Kamigawa.

    Kaito followed Futurist research into devices where kami and machinery could cooperate. Himoto bonded with a tanuki prototype and reshaped it into a mask, a relationship rather than a component installed by force. The contact focused Kaito’s telekinesis and ignited his spark, pulling him through his first planeswalk.

    Other planes offered clues but no simple map. The emperor’s unstable travel left impressions rather than a route, and Tezzeret worked through intermediaries. Kaito trained his magic, swordcraft and surveillance while measuring every discovery against the people left behind: his sister Eiko, the absent emperor and a Kamigawa changing faster than court policy.

    Himoto remained proof that progress did not require stripping a spirit of agency. That distinction became essential when Kaito returned. The technology he investigated could create partnership, amplify existing power or turn living beings into material, and similar metal surfaces concealed very different choices.

  3. Neon clues and old betrayals

    Kaito traced off-world experiments through Towashi and Otawara until a trusted mentor’s secrecy exposed Jin-Gitaxias.

    Ten years after leaving Eiganjo, Kaito followed renewed evidence through neon streets and floating laboratories. Tameshi, once mentor and friend, had been helping Tezzeret study kami. His reasons included belief in technological progress and resentment toward Imperial limits, but the work had already passed beyond any boundary he could control.

    Jin-Gitaxias used captured spirits to investigate how planar travel damaged organic bodies. Tezzeret supplied movement, access and the Reality Chip while treating every partner as temporary. When Tameshi tried to resist, the alliance killed him. Kaito inherited no clean confession, only evidence that betrayal and coercion had been built into the project.

    Tamiyo joined the investigation because experiments on Kamigawa threatened her family and the plane she studied as home. Her caution balanced Kaito’s urgency, yet both underestimated how much data Jin had already gathered. They were trying to close a laboratory whose results were becoming the foundation of Phyrexia’s next campaign.

  4. The Wanderer comes home

    The swordswoman Kaito had chased through rumours returned as the emperor, carrying a spark that still refused to let her remain.

    Tamiyo revealed that the Wanderer and Kamigawa’s missing emperor were the same person. The Reality Chip had triggered her spark and left it unstable, forcing constant concentration to stay on any plane. Years of sudden arrivals and departures had made her a formidable traveller without granting the freedom planeswalking normally implied.

    Kaito and the emperor reunited first as fighters and only slowly as friends. Time had changed both of them, and duty filled every pause that childhood conversation once occupied. In Kyodai’s chamber, the Reality Chip briefly strengthened the bond between emperor and guardian, offering a possible anchor while also connecting them to Jin’s system.

    Homecoming immediately became a political event. Light-Paws saw the return as stability for the court; the Asari Uprisers saw a last chance to break Imperial rule. The emperor wanted to protect Kamigawa without allowing her presence to excuse the grievances that had grown during ten years of silence.

  5. Two battles for Kamigawa

    An attack on Eiganjo and a break-in at the laboratory forced the returning emperor to defend both Kyodai and the people who had searched for her.

    Risona led the Asari toward Eiganjo while Kaito and Tamiyo entered the laboratory to free captive kami and destroy the research. Dividing the crisis was exactly what Tezzeret needed. The Reality Chip could threaten Kyodai, amplify the emperor and serve as a line through which he interfered with her already unstable spark.

    Kaito and Tamiyo were captured before they could complete the sabotage. The emperor chose to leave the palace and rescue them, rejecting the idea that duty meant remaining where advisers could protect her. She struck Jin-Gitaxias, cut her friends free and fought beside Kaito with the familiarity their years apart had not erased.

    Tezzeret manipulated the Chip and forced the emperor between locations as Eiganjo’s battle continued. She adapted, using the connection to reach Kyodai and oppose Risona. Victory required strength on both fronts, but it did not solve the political argument or remove the vulnerability in her spark.

  6. A victory Phyrexia carries away

    Kamigawa survived and its emperor returned, yet Tezzeret escaped with Jin-Gitaxias and a compleated Tamiyo.

    The emperor defeated Risona without turning the battle into an execution, and Kyodai survived the assault. Kaito’s allies disrupted the local operation. These were real victories: captive kami were no longer experimental stock, Eiganjo did not fall and the truth of the emperor’s identity could no longer be controlled by rumour.

    Her spark nevertheless pulled the Wanderer away again. Light-Paws became regent, recognising that Kamigawa needed a government able to remain between emergencies. Kaito promised to resume the search, now understanding that bringing the emperor home could not mean forcing her to occupy the same role as the child who vanished.

    Tezzeret carried Jin-Gitaxias and Tamiyo through the Planar Bridge. On New Phyrexia, Tamiyo awakened compleated with her spark intact—the first success of Jin’s programme. Kamigawa had stopped an incursion without preventing its knowledge from leaving. The story closes where the larger invasion begins: Phyrexia can now turn planeswalkers into agents capable of carrying family, memory and betrayal across worlds.
