Tezzeret

Metal-shaper, survivor and architect forever escaping another master

Tezzeret can remake metal more easily than he can escape the bargains that shaped him. Each master teaches him another system to exploit, and each escape leaves him determined that no one will own him again.

Profile

Why Tezzeret matters

Tezzeret rose from poverty on Esper, where etherium marked status as clearly as wealth. Talent for artifice gave him a path upward and a metal arm made ambition visible on his body. He seized control of the Infinite Consortium, only to be defeated by Jace. Nicol Bolas reconstructed his broken mind and flesh, converting rescue into ownership and returning Tezzeret to the Multiverse as an agent who understood exactly what a debt could cost.

Bolas sent him to Mirrodin to observe the Phyrexian transformation and evaluate whether Karn’s throne could be taken. Tezzeret admired a civilisation that treated flesh as a correctable flaw, but he wanted command rather than surrender. Karn’s rescue ended that attempt. Tezzeret returned to Bolas carrying knowledge, resentment and the habit of appearing loyal while preserving a private route toward power.

On Avishkar he operated behind the Consulate, captured the Inventors’ Fair and pursued Rashmi’s Planar Bridge. Defeat cost him the city but not the device. The Bridge was implanted into his body, letting Bolas move the Eternals from Amonkhet to Ravnica. Every use burned Tezzeret from within. His greatest utility to his master was also an execution slowly taking place beneath his skin.

Tezzeret later transported New Phyrexia’s praetors while looking for the moment when service could become leverage. He withheld full loyalty, survived Jin-Gitaxias’s experiments and secured a darksteel body that freed him from the Bridge’s decay. After Phyrexia fell, he began rebuilding the reach of the Infinite Consortium and eventually found opportunity beyond the familiar Multiverse. Freedom, for Tezzeret, still looks dangerously like becoming the master first.
