Avacyn
Innistrad's manufactured guardian and the tragedy of protection without doubt
Avacyn anchors Innistrad's hope in a guardian made by Sorin. Her fall turns protection into persecution and leaves the world facing a harder question: who protects its people when their strongest defender can no longer be trusted?
Profile
Why Avacyn matters
Avacyn was made by Sorin Markov to protect Innistrad's human population and sustain a balance that unchecked vampires would destroy. She was a manufactured guardian, not a planeswalker. Her power became the centre of a faith whose wards and confidence allowed vulnerable communities to endure.
Her allegiance also served her creator. When Nahiri confronted Sorin over his failure to answer Zendikar's summons, Avacyn intervened against the lithomancer. The encounter exposes the uncomfortable overlap between defending a world and defending the person who designed its protection.
Before her later corruption, Avacyn had already disappeared into the Helvault during her battle with Griselbrand. Her absence weakened the angels and the wards that sustained human settlements. When the prison shattered, she returned at full strength, renewed those protections and helped turn survival into a successful counterattack. That earlier return is not a resurrection after Sorin's later unmaking.
During the Avacyn crisis, an intrusive influence distorted her judgment. Human weakness became contamination to be purged, and violence acquired the language of holiness. Sigarda's refusal and Tamiyo's investigation show why unquestioning belief in a protector is not a substitute for examining what that protector does.
In Thraben, Avacyn recognised the gulf between her purpose and her killings, but refused to become Sorin's instrument again. He unmade her. Her ending brings immediate relief and a devastating loss of protection; an originally benevolent purpose cannot undo the harm.
The Avacyn who raises devoted followers as undead in the Echoverse has a different creator-history: her Sorin is a werewolf. That counterpart does not reverse the original angel's death.
