WHO GUARDS THE GUARDIANS

Innistrad: Hunters and Secrets

Avacyn's protectors confront Garruk's curse, the cost of their own certainty and a buried account of the angel's creation. Protection does not make every hunter right.

Why this story matters

The route in brief

Innistrad needs people willing to face its monsters. That need does not settle every question about the people carrying weapons or their beliefs. A disciplined soldier can misunderstand a quarry, and a devoted hunter can mistake obedience for a complete moral answer.

These accounts belong to Avacyn's earlier protective era, before her angels' later madness. They follow different observers: Odric meets a cursed outsider, Vronos pursues the same figure, and a cathedral attendant encounters an unsettling history.

Read them as a route through the limits of certainty. Garruk's curse is not simply werewolf infection, a mission to heal him is not an execution order, and Avacyn's origin does not erase the real lives her protection preserved.

Story Chapters

  1. Odric discovers a quarry outside his familiar rules

A trapping mission captures Garruk, but Grete prevents Odric from turning his fear into an immediate execution.

Reports of violence drew Odric's cathars into a woodland ambush. A dead child became bait, and nets finally caught the immense figure stalking the clearing. The captured man was Garruk, carrying a corruption the soldiers could not confidently fit into their usual categories.

Odric's anger pushed him toward killing the prisoner. Grete challenged that decision: this was not a straightforward werewolf hunt, and the evidence did not justify treating every frightening sign as a settled diagnosis.

They chose to take Garruk alive to Thraben and seek Avacyn's help. That decision preserved a possibility; the account does not show the angel successfully curing him. Odric's discipline mattered most when someone else made him stop and examine his judgment.

  2. A hunter's return becomes his final pursuit

Vronos returns from Esper to serve Avacyn, but Garruk turns a mission of healing into a fatal hunt.

Vronos carried the memory of an Inquisition raid in which mercy toward children had been followed by a werewolf attack. His spark took him to Esper, where study and etherium changed his damaged body. Returning to Innistrad meant returning to the angel he served.

Avacyn wanted Garruk brought to her for healing, not killed as an enemy. Vronos pursued him anyway with a hunter's trained confidence, until the cursed planeswalker defeated him and forced a wounded retreat.

Hidden in a cave, Vronos gathered herbs and tried to recover. Garruk followed his trail and delivered the final axe strike. Neither loyal service nor the possibility of crossing worlds made Vronos safe from the quarry his mission required him to preserve.

  3. A recovered journal unsettles a cathedral attendant

Dovid learns that Sorin created Avacyn to preserve humans within a world whose vampires depend on them.

Dovid's new duties in Thraben brought him a journal recovered with a dead man's body. It was attributed to Lunarch Mikaeus, and it reached beyond a local crime into the history the attendant had trusted without needing to examine it.

The record described Edgar Markov's bargain with Shilgengar and the making of vampires. It then placed Sorin's creation of Avacyn within a problem of survival: unchecked vampires could exhaust the human population on which their own existence depended.

Dovid heard that balance as an intolerable reduction of people to resources. His anger belongs to the reader of the journal, not to a newly proven claim that every act of Avacyn's protection was false. The revelation changed his understanding without changing the lives already saved.
