Dovin Baan
An inspector who made control look like safety
Dovin could detect a machine's failure with extraordinary precision. His career made that talent politically dangerous: he kept improving systems while serving authorities whose purposes deserved the harder inspection.
Profile
Why Dovin Baan matters
Dovin worked as a senior Consulate inspector on the plane then called Kaladesh. His perception exposed tiny mechanical flaws and predictable failures. Fewer accidents were a genuine achievement, but the same outlook encouraged him to treat resistance as a defect to be corrected.
He asked the Gatewatch to protect the Inventors' Fair from renegades. That appeal brought Chandra home to the regime that had shattered her family. Dovin's professional language concealed how far security could serve confiscation and coercion.
When revolt reached the Aether Spire, he sabotaged Hope of Ghirapur, the thopter intended to disable the Planar Bridge. Precision helped preserve a dangerous operation rather than protect its victims. The fall of Tezzeret's Consulate did not end Dovin's political career.
On Ravnica he became Grand Arbiter of the Azorius after Isperia's death, using surveillance and prediction while serving Bolas. He fled during the war, leaving Lavinia as acting guildmaster. After the victory, Ravnica assigned Vraska to hunt him; escape was not acquittal.
