THREE RESPONSES TO A CITY UNDER SIEGE

Ravnica: The Cost of Allegiance

Teyo protects people before he trusts himself, Domri mistakes conquest for opportunity, and Dovin leaves a government whose authority no longer shelters him.

Why this story matters

The route in brief

The invasion of Ravnica did not find its people in one moral or political position. New arrivals had to learn the danger while defending strangers. Guild leaders brought ambitions, habits and obligations that could either strengthen resistance or make the city's divisions easier to exploit.

Teyo, Domri and Dovin show different relationships with power. A hesitant shieldmage makes protection useful without waiting to become fearless. A rebel sees a conqueror's destruction as an alliance. An inspector carries the promise of orderly systems into institutions serving an invading dragon.

These chapters keep the scales distinct. Saving someone in an alley is not the same as deciding a guild's allegiance, and flight from office is not a verdict of innocence. Their actions matter because particular people must live or die with the results, not because one label settles every choice.

Story Chapters

  1. Teyo protects strangers while still learning where he is

Rat and Kaya give an unfamiliar arrival his first connections, while his shields give others time to survive.

Teyo arrived expecting Gobakhan and found a world Rat had to name for him. The young acolyte knew diamondstorms and the Shieldmage Order; he did not yet understand planeswalkers, Ravnica or the war unfolding around him.

When an Eternal threatened Kaya, he put a shield between them. He kept forming barriers for civilians even as exhaustion and uncertainty grew. Rat's attacks and his protection became complementary ways to keep moving.

He later shielded Saheeli as more planeswalkers entered the fight. None of that required him to feel suddenly invulnerable. His useful response came first: hold a barrier long enough for another person to escape or strike back.

  2. Domri chooses the dragon and loses his people's trust

The Gruul leader briefly helps the defenders before mistaking Bolas's destruction for a future partnership.

Domri's Gruul fighters first relieved Kaya and Teyo when Eternals pressed them in an alley. Their arrival was practical help, whatever their leader's appetite for chaos. The invading army could still be fought as an immediate enemy.

That calculation changed when Domri welcomed the destruction of Vitu-Ghazi. He proposed joining Bolas, imagining the guilds' collapse would let the Gruul rule. Gan Shokta rejected the distinction between serving a conqueror and supposedly becoming his partner.

Domri received no exemption from the harvest. The resistance later named him as the first planeswalker stripped of his spark. His destruction of solidarity did not purchase safety, and the wild freedom he promised ended inside another power's machinery.

  3. Dovin's office cannot protect him from the consequences

Bolas's Azorius collaborator flees; the surviving guilds leave Lavinia in charge and assign Vraska a pursuit.

Dovin brought an inspector's confidence to the Azorius after Isperia's death. Prediction and policing could look like solutions to disorder while serving Bolas's larger design. A government capable of anticipating violations was not thereby asking whether its own direction was just.

During the war, Dovin fled Ravnica. Lavinia became acting guildmaster, allowing the Senate to participate in the city's answer without its departed leader. Losing the office did not undo his collaboration.

After Bolas's defeat, the surviving leadership assigned Vraska to hunt Dovin. That was a new obligation imposed on another compromised ally, not a completed account of the pursuit. The wartime route ends with accountability demanded, rather than escape being mistaken for forgiveness.
