Why Narset matters

Narset grew up among the Jeskai in one history and the Ojutai in another, yet both lives were shaped by an extraordinary hunger to learn. In Tarkir’s original timeline she became khan of the Jeskai, combining martial mastery with a contemplative search for meaning. Her meeting with Sarkhan offered a glimpse of the Multiverse before Zurgo killed her, a death erased when Sarkhan travelled into the past and saved Ugin.

The restored Spirit Dragon changed everything. Dragons ruled Tarkir, the clans became broods and Narset was raised as Ojutai’s gifted student rather than a khan. She excelled within that order but kept finding contradictions in its official history. Hidden records revealed the khans, Ugin’s survival and the compromises on which draconic rule had been built. Ojutai discovered her research and, rather than destroying her, allowed the search to continue beyond the limits imposed on other scholars.

Understanding the lost timeline ignited Narset’s spark. For an instant she perceived another world, yet she chose to remain on Tarkir and follow the questions already beneath her feet. Sarkhan’s return confirmed that history had truly been rewritten and taught her what planeswalkers were. Where he celebrated the return of dragons, Narset recognised the people and traditions that had been removed from their own story.

After the Phyrexian invasion and the loss of her spark, research became resistance. Narset gathered exiles, preserved forbidden clan knowledge and searched for a way to end the dragonstorms tearing Tarkir apart. The Stormnexus Ritual saved the plane but cost Ojutai his life, leaving grief beside liberation. Narset’s defining power is not a spell or title. It is her refusal to let the winners of one age decide what every later generation is permitted to remember.
