Pia Nalaar

Renegade engineer who keeps turning invention into shared freedom

Pia Nalaar helped dismantle the old Consulate, then brought the same practical defiance to an interplanar race where two younger women needed a mechanic, a mentor and a mother who knew when to let them choose.

Profile

Why Pia Nalaar matters

Pia Nalaar learned long ago that invention is political. The old Consulate praised brilliant devices while controlling who could build, own and benefit from them. As Renegade Prime, Pia organised people who refused that arrangement and paid for resistance with danger to her family, including the loss of her husband Kiran. The successful revolt did not turn grief into a finished chapter. It left her with a new Avishkar to help build and a daughter whose long absences made every reunion carry both pride and worry.

The Ghirapur Grand Prix placed Pia in the garage rather than the spotlight. As mechanic for the Aether Rangers, she tuned Sita Varma's vehicle and protected the secret behind Spitfire's mask. Pia recognised the familiar pattern: a gifted young woman loved by a controlling father and forced to divide herself in order to breathe. She did not replace Mohar's orders with her own. She offered tools, boundaries and honest criticism, giving Sita the kind of guidance that expanded choice instead of narrowing it.

Chandra's return complicated the work. Pia was proud that her daughter had helped save the Multiverse and unsettled by how readily Chandra still treated self-sacrifice as a plan. Across Amonkhet and Muraganda, Pia watched two racers pursue the same prize for different forms of freedom. She also saw Chandra stop for a captive child, followed her into the raiders' camp and helped Daretti turn wreckage, palm wood and impossible optimism into one more working vehicle.

At the finish line, the old Consulate tried to reclaim Avishkar through Mohar's coup. Pia answered as she always had: identify the machinery of control, organise whoever still had agency and make resistance practical. Sita saved her when a guard's blade made the fight personal, and the three women moved together as a team no race roster had planned. Pia's victory was not the Aetherspark. It was seeing Sita choose solidarity, Chandra accept help and Avishkar reject restoration of a hierarchy it had already outgrown.
