Teyo learned shields to save people from diamondstorms, then found himself defending strangers on Ravnica. His strongest lessons came from trusting an instinct that formal training had made him doubt.

Why Teyo Verada matters
A diamondstorm destroyed Teyo's village on Gobakhan. Shieldmages found him as its only survivor, protected by a shield he had formed without training. The spell had saved him alone, leaving survival entwined with guilt rather than triumph.
He entered the Shieldmage Order to learn how to protect others. Its strict methods did not fit the intuitive gift that had kept him alive. Being capable and feeling competent became very different things for the anxious young mage.
An unexpected planeswalk brought him into Ravnica's invasion. Rat helped him understand where he was, and Kaya became an ally. Teyo shielded the assassin, civilians and Saheeli against Eternals, putting useful magic into action before confidence caught up.
Later he returned to Gobakhan with greater trust in his own methods. His aim remained protection. The diamondblade assassin depicted in the Echoverse was a counterpart shaped by different choices, not a secret violent identity behind the original shieldmage.
