Tibalt

A tormentor whose stories could not control their ending

Tibalt made suffering his craft and conflict his entertainment. On Kaldheim he stole a god's identity; on New Phyrexia, the cruelty he once wielded returned inside a transformed body.

Profile

Why Tibalt matters

Born human on Innistrad, Tibalt pursued pain through fiendish magic and became a half-devil. Other people's fear was not an unfortunate consequence of his work. It was the experience he wanted to create, study and enjoy.

Vorinclex forced him into service by planting a Phyrexian seed in his body. Tibalt's account recast the humiliation as another brilliant plan. On Kaldheim he imprisoned Valki, wore the god's identity, killed the smith Koll and took the Sword of the Realms.

The stolen weapon let him manipulate passage between realms. He inflamed old grievances, released Koma into Starnheim and helped produce the Doomskar while Vorinclex pursued a quieter theft. Kaya and Tyvar broke his ambush; Tibalt escaped rather than fulfilling his promised victory.

On New Phyrexia he appeared compleated and fought beside Ajani. His magic turned doubt against Elspeth until Tyvar suppressed it with transmuting metal. Tyvar then drove Tibalt's own tail barbs into his chest and threw him from the bridge. His death ended that confrontation, not the invasion.
