Elspeth searches for a lost home in a city where five families ration angelic power, while Giada and Urabrask turn hidden histories into competing promises of freedom

Streets of New Capenna

Elspeth Tirel enters New Capenna seeking the world of her childhood and a weapon against Phyrexia. She finds five crime families fighting over Halo, Giada trapped as its living source and Ob Nixilis converting the city's fear into an empire.

Why this story matters

The route in brief

New Capenna survives by looking upward. Park Heights glitters above the crowded Mezzio, the furnaces of Caldaia burn below and five crime families insist that their influence is the only thing keeping the vertical city from falling apart. Every promise, performance, shipment and secret ultimately circles the same dwindling resource: Halo, a luminous substance that powers magic, commerce and authority.

Elspeth Tirel comes to the plane for a more personal reason. Ajani and Karn have identified New Capenna as the home she lost in childhood and as a place that once defeated a Phyrexian invasion. She hopes its archives can explain both her past and a way to resist New Phyrexia. Instead, the search pulls her into the Maestros, whose museum preserves history beside the evidence of their murders.

Two hidden figures change the meaning of that investigation. Giada is presented by the Cabaretti as the Font, a young woman able to create Halo but denied the freedom to decide how her gift is used. Far beneath the city, the wounded praetor Urabrask plots against Elesh Norn and asks Vivien Reid to help turn New Capenna into the beginning of a wider rebellion.

Ob Nixilis exploits every fault line at once. Working through infiltrators and frightened lieutenants, he attacks the families during the Crescendo and tries to seize Giada for himself. The struggle that follows reveals what the city buried: Halo comes from angels, survival was purchased through betrayal and home can be a duty chosen in the present rather than a place recovered from the past.

Story Chapters

  1. A City Fed by Halo

Elspeth arrives in a vertical metropolis whose five families divide territory, loyalty and a shrinking supply of angelic power.

Elspeth reaches New Capenna expecting recognition and finds only distance. The old world she remembers is buried beneath a city stacked into three social layers. The Riveteers keep Caldaia's engines and construction alive, ordinary commerce crowds the Mezzio and the wealthiest citizens rise to Park Heights. Movement between those levels is possible, but never neutral; every lift, station and workplace sits inside a family's sphere of influence.

The Brokers turn law into binding obligation, the Obscura trade in information, the Maestros pair cultural preservation with assassination, the Cabaretti make celebration a form of recruitment and the Riveteers organize labor through strength and solidarity. Their rivalries are restrained by habit rather than peace. As the supply of Halo contracts, each family prepares to secure whatever remains before its neighbors can do the same.

Elspeth keeps her head down, taking work and listening for traces of the history Ajani described. Violence at a tailor's shop makes anonymity impossible. She drives away Maestro enforcers who are collecting a debt and attracts the attention of Anhelo, Xander's lieutenant. His offer of a place among the Maestros is dangerous, but their museum contains records of the old city and images of angels fighting enemies Elspeth recognizes as Phyrexians.

Elsewhere, the Cabaretti prepare the Crescendo around a carefully guarded teenager named Giada. Jinnie Fay speaks of the girl as someone cherished by the family, yet Giada cannot leave without permission. The contradiction is New Capenna in miniature: luxury disguises confinement, generosity creates debt and a person can be praised as the future while being denied control of her own life.

  2. Tests Among the Families

Xander tests Elspeth's usefulness while she follows the city's erased past and Giada begins to trust the stranger sent to investigate her.

Joining the Maestros gives Elspeth access without belonging. She catalogs art in Xander's museum, studies damaged depictions of angels and accepts assignments designed to measure her discretion. An exchange with an Obscura informant becomes an ambush, but Elspeth delivers the package and returns with a sharper understanding of how every family uses outsiders as disposable distance between intention and consequence.

Xander recognizes that she is pursuing something larger than advancement. Over a glass of Halo, he explains that the substance is more than a fashionable intoxicant: it amplifies magic, concentrates influence and once protected the city. He promises full access to his archives if Elspeth completes one final task. She must enter the Cabaretti's orbit and identify the source they intend to reveal at the Crescendo.

The assignment brings Elspeth to Kitt Kanto, Jinnie Fay and Giada. Giada has been surrounded by comfort but starved of ordinary choices, and Elspeth's direct attention feels different from the possessive affection of the family. Their first exchanges establish a trust neither woman planned. Elspeth sees someone being prepared for use; Giada sees a protector who asks what she wants before deciding where she belongs.

The closer Elspeth moves to the Font, the less convincing the families' language becomes. They speak of loyalty while arranging betrayals, of protection while collecting people and of family while measuring every relationship for leverage. Elspeth continues the deception because Xander's archive may help stop Phyrexia, but Giada turns the mission from information gathering into a question she cannot postpone: what is knowledge worth if obtaining it leaves another captive?

  3. The Rebellion Below Caldaia

Vivien discovers Urabrask beneath the city and learns that one Phyrexian praetor intends to resist Elesh Norn's demand for total unity.

Vivien Reid arrives in New Capenna because its mixture of industry and surviving nature feels wrong. Tezzeret leads her below Caldaia, where passage through the Planar Bridge has torn organic material from a wounded Phyrexian. The creature is Urabrask, praetor of the Quiet Furnace and an enemy of the orthodoxy now uniting New Phyrexia under Elesh Norn.

Urabrask does not reject Phyrexia itself. He rejects compulsory unity. Norn intends to make every world Phyrexian and every Phyrexian obedient to her vision; Urabrask believes transformation without choice is domination. That distinction does not make him safe, and Vivien never treats him as such. It does create a temporary alignment between people who understand that Norn's victory would erase every independent form of life.

Halo helps Urabrask repair the damage inflicted by interplanar travel. Vivien gathers information and learns that the Adversary destabilizing the families is Ob Nixilis, while Tezzeret continues serving interests he only partly reveals. Urabrask wants Elspeth because her history, spark and capacity to inspire Mirrans could make her the symbol around which resistance forms. Vivien insists that Elspeth must be informed rather than compelled.

The alliance is built on converging goals, not trust. Vivien approaches Elspeth only after confirming that the knight is pursuing the same threat and allows her to continue searching the Maestros' archives. Urabrask agrees to wait, but his patience has an edge: the city is already close to breaking, and a crisis may force Elspeth to choose the rebellion before she would choose it freely.

  4. The Crescendo Breaks

Giada fills the promised Font, Ob Nixilis strikes every family and Elspeth chooses the person behind the resource.

At the Crescendo, the Cabaretti stage abundance as proof of leadership. Giada places her hands against an enormous empty vessel and fills it with Halo in a burst of light. The display confirms the rumor that the family has found a new source, but it also exposes the truth Elspeth feared: Giada is not merely guarding the Font. The city intends to treat her body and power as the Font.

Ob Nixilis attacks before the celebration can become a new political order. His agents have infiltrated several families, Maestro killers move through the crowd and the Adversary's campaign turns rivalry into open war. Xander is murdered at his museum, Jetmir is wounded and every faction assumes another family has arranged the bloodshed. Ob Nixilis gains strength from a city too suspicious to coordinate against him.

Elspeth abandons her cover and takes Giada out of the Vantoleone. Jinnie demands the girl back in the language of safety, but Elspeth refuses to hand a person to those who value what she produces more than what she chooses. Vivien intervenes long enough for them to escape, and Giada actively chooses to leave by taking Elspeth's hand and guiding her through the backstage route, rather than waiting passively to be rescued.

The escape costs Elspeth her place among both the Maestros and Cabaretti. Returning to the museum for a weapon, she finds Xander's collection bloodied and his people convinced that she served the Adversary. She leaves with a heavy sword, Giada and Vivien as her only dependable allies. In a city organized around belonging, protecting Giada has made all three of them outsiders.

  5. Hymn of the Angels

Giada answers the angels' call, transforms Elspeth's weapon with Halo and denies Ob Nixilis the living prize on which his victory depends.

Jinnie overtakes the escapees and insists on bringing Giada back to Jetmir. The young woman delays violence by invoking her guardian's authority; Elspeth and Vivien remain uneasy companions. An Obscura guide named Kamiz offers shelter, but the supposed refuge is soon attacked. Kamiz leads them through hidden passages toward Park Heights, their distrust growing with every turn. On the approach, Giada discards a tracking bracelet and warns Elspeth. Kamiz then reveals her betrayal as Obscura enforcers spring a trap. The group manages to break free of the Obscura ambush and flees through the gardens, reaching the cathedral on its own rather than being escorted there as prisoners.

Inside the cathedral, Giada hears a song no one else can fully follow. The place restores fragments of identity that the Cabaretti never understood: she belongs to the angels whose power became Halo, and the family she has been seeking is not a syndicate that owns her gift. For Elspeth, the same revelation changes home from recovered geography into chosen purpose. She belongs wherever her strength can keep another person free.

Ob Nixilis arrives to claim Giada and crush the resistance personally. Elspeth cannot match his speed and power with the oversized weapon she carries. Giada refuses to run. Her physical form becomes light, the outlines of angels gather around her and her Halo transforms Elspeth's sword into a balanced weapon capable of carrying the power of the city Ob Nixilis tried to steal.

Elspeth wounds Ob Nixilis, but he escapes alive by planeswalking away; Giada's gift defeats his attempt to seize the Font, not the demon's continued existence. Giada joins the angels rather than remaining anyone's resource. Her choice leaves grief, but not defeat. Xander's final instructions open the Maestro archives to Elspeth, where she and Vivien learn that ancient demons trapped angels and converted them into Halo after an alliance defeated the first Phyrexian invasion. Elspeth leaves with knowledge and a small supply that may help the coming war, while New Capenna must face the moral cost beneath its survival.

  6. Lives Between the Family Lines

Away from Elspeth's route, four street-level stories reveal how contracts, secrets, work, art and ambition shape daily life under the families.

Broker enforcer Perrie is ordered to punish a child who broke a contract, even though the boy could not understand the danger surrounding it. Falco Spara offers advancement in exchange for obedience and frames cruelty as preparation for a coming war. Perrie refuses the easiest interpretation of duty. He protects the child and proves that order has no moral value when its rules exist only to make vulnerable people useful.

Obscura investigators Kamiz and Queza trace an imploded building, altered memories and sudden angel symbols through the city's layers. A Broker conspirator tries to bind Kamiz with a magical contract while claiming any method is justified if it saves New Capenna. Illusion turns the trap back on its author. The case reveals both the prophecy of a city doomed when Halo runs out and the possibility that angels are already returning.

Riveteer muscle and Maestro ambition collide around ordinary workers, smugglers and family obligations. Anhelo accepts an assassination on the day of his daughter Errant's wedding, survives revenge from a victim's son and reaches the ceremony only after recognizing how completely work has colonized his idea of family. When another crisis report arrives, he finally chooses the people waiting in the room over the organization that always asks for one more sacrifice.

Kitt Kanto's rise begins with a delivery of stolen Halo and a sabotaged train. She sacrifices an expensive gown, escapes with help from the city birds and completes the shipment before turning the ordeal into a song aimed directly at the Riveteers who tried to stop her. Jetmir rewards talent, nerve and useful loyalty. Her triumph is genuine, but it also shows how the Cabaretti convert dreams into recruitment.

Together, these lives explain why the five families endure. They provide work, protection, identity and a route upward in a city with few neutral institutions. They also turn each benefit into leverage. New Capenna is not saved only when Ob Nixilis loses a duel; it begins to change whenever Perrie, Kamiz, Queza, Anhelo or Kitt decides which promise deserves loyalty and which version of family is merely another contract.
