Vivien Reid
Keeper of vanished beasts searching for balance after Skalla
Vivien Reid carries the last echoes of Skalla’s wildlife inside the Arkbow. She protects nature fiercely because she has already watched one world’s false choice between wilderness and progress end in ash.
Profile
Why Vivien Reid matters
Vivien is the last survivor of Skalla, a plane destroyed after its defenders of nature and advocates of progress failed to find a durable balance. Nicol Bolas turned that failure into extinction. Vivien escaped with grief, anger and the Arkbow, a weapon able to preserve the life essence of dying animals. When she draws its string, those stored beings return as spirit incarnations—an entire lost ecology answering the hand of one survivor.
The Arkbow makes Vivien a conservationist and a hunter at the same time. She does not idealise every animal as gentle, nor does she think civilisation must disappear. Her question is whether a world leaves room for living systems that cannot speak in councils or defend themselves from unchecked appetite. Encounters with collectors and torturers who wanted the bow’s power hardened that principle. Skalla’s creatures are not specimens to own; they are lives entrusted to her memory.
On Ikoria, Vivien found a plane where humans and enormous creatures survived in a tense, evolving relationship. She recognised possibility in Lukka’s bond with monsters but opposed the attempt to make that bond a weapon of domination. New Capenna presented the inverse problem: a glittering city whose manufactured beauty stood above a dead landscape. There she followed Tezzeret, met the rebel praetor Urabrask and searched for Halo while judging every alliance by the life it might preserve.
During the Phyrexian invasion, Vivien helped Ikoria face a compleated Lukka fused into a mass of stolen creatures. The plane’s own predators ultimately proved that adaptation could resist imposed perfection, and Vivien ended what remained of the man she had once encouraged to join the strike team. That grief joins Skalla’s ghosts without replacing them. She continues because preservation is not passive: sometimes balance must be defended by the sharpest arrow in the Multiverse.
