Why Ob Nixilis matters

Before horns, wings and centuries of schemes, Ob Nixilis was a human warlord. He broke every rival on his home world and discovered that total conquest produced only an empty throne. His spark opened new worlds to subjugate, turning planeswalking into an extension of empire. Contact with the Chain Veil transformed him into a demon. What began as a curse became, in his judgement, a more honest body for the domination he already desired.

Zendikar stopped that expansion. Nahiri defeated the intruder and drove a hedron into his skull, severing his connection to the Blind Eternities. Trapped on a world of violent mana, Ob spent millennia studying the prison rather than accepting it. He accumulated servants, tested ways to remove the hedron and learned how Zendikar’s leylines and stone network might replace the power that had been denied him.

At Sea Gate, the aligned hedrons contained Ulamog and gathered exactly the energy Ob needed. He disrupted the network, reignited his spark and called Kozilek from beneath the plane. Then he imprisoned Gideon, Jace and Nissa in agonising magic, savouring revenge more than escape. Chandra’s arrival broke his advantage, but Ob left Zendikar restored, having converted another people’s near-victory into his release.

Bolas’s beacon later trapped Ob on Ravnica with dozens of other planeswalkers. Survival did not make him cooperative for long. On New Capenna he moved through the five families as a rival crime lord, hunting Halo and a city he could seize from within. Elspeth’s resistance ruined the takeover and forced him away. The pattern remains constant: every setback becomes evidence, to Ob, that the next conquest must be more absolute.
