WHO ANSWERS A WOUNDED WORLD
Zendikar: Before the Last Stand
Before a shared last stand, Zendikar's defenders and enemies follow separate paths. Nissa learns to listen, Gideon reaches exhaustion and Ob Nixilis searches for escape.
Why this story matters
The route in brief
Zendikar's crisis did not begin with a united group arriving at Sea Gate. Its people, visitors and prisoners came to the conflict carrying different injuries and obligations. The same wounded land could call one person to help and offer another an opportunity to steal enough power to leave.
This route opens with Nahiri's ancient repair, then jumps forward to early experiences beside the later preparations for resistance. Nissa's first journey beyond her home is an origin, not an episode occurring alongside Gideon's exhausted search for allies. Her later encounter with fellow survivors shows how that beginning could grow into practical cooperation.
These accounts lead toward larger campaigns without replacing them. They stop where their own evidence stops: a promise of restored power is not a restored spark, and surviving a desperate escape is not the same as securing a city.

Nahiri repairs the prison before a later generation's war
An ancient disturbance releases Eldrazi broods, not the imprisoned titans; Nahiri restores the network without her promised allies.
Long before Nissa's life, Nahiri woke from her vigil to find Zendikar in pain. The hedron network had shifted enough for Eldrazi broods to emerge while the titans remained bound. Her summons to Sorin and Ugin brought no help.
Visiting places she had once taught the kor to guard revealed changed beliefs and a sacrificial site interfering with the network. Nahiri destroyed the immediate obstacles and shaped a new hedron, working from the patterns Ugin had taught her.
The repair returned the titans to stillness; the remaining broods and the land's upheaval did not instantly disappear. She left to find Sorin, wanting an explanation and renewed life. This ancient intervention is not the later release that confronts Zendikar's modern defenders. This intervention occurs roughly a millennium before the Eldrazi escape confronting the modern Gatewatch, not immediately before the 2015 Sea Gate campaign. Nahiri's emergency message reaches neither Sorin nor Ugin. Inside the renewed prison network, she must deal with warped religious practices around an image of Ulamog; she remakes the offensive stone into part of the repair itself. Restoring a prison here does not mean the titans were defeated or released.

Nissa's first journey teaches her what not to become
A frightened world's call takes Nissa to Akoum and then Lorwyn, where belonging would require accepting another people's cruelty.
Visions drew Nissa and Mazik toward Akoum. Listening and song could soothe Zendikar's frightened magic, but the darkness inside the mountain overwhelmed the help they could gather. Her attempt to confront it did not destroy the hidden threat. Terror ignited her spark and carried her away.
On Lorwyn she briefly followed elves whose welcome seemed to offer safety. Their hunt revealed innocent victims behind the language of ugliness and purity. Nissa refused the killing rather than accepting belonging on those terms.
The Great Aurora changed the world around her; she did not cause it. As danger and a tempting voice pressed in, she chose her own path back to Zendikar. Her first departure became a reason to return, not permission to treat any home as simple or harmless. Nissa's first Lorwyn encounter is not an easy lesson in finding like-minded elves. Their selective cruelty toward those they consider ugly makes belonging morally conditional. She refuses the hunt and leaves during the Great Aurora without causing the transformation. The chronology must not confuse this first ignited spark with her later loss and restoration of contact with Zendikar's soul.

A rescue becomes the beginning of cooperation
Hamadi and his companions help Nissa discover that power against the Eldrazi can grow through a group, not only through isolation.
A later confrontation left Nissa dependent on survivors who carried losses of their own. Hamadi's party crossed Zendikar through skills she did not possess, including the Kor's methods of traversing its broken and floating landscape. Accepting help broadened what she could attempt.
When a huge Eldrazi and its spawn threatened them, Nissa joined the defence with living vines and elementals. Her connection to the land had battlefield value, but it worked alongside people who protected one another and kept fighting.
The group tended its wounded and encouraged her to use that strength for others. They did not establish that she could defeat a titan alone. The episode turns Worldwaker from a magnificent title into a responsibility exercised with companions.

Two commitments push Gideon past his limits
Failures on Ravnica and Zendikar force Gideon to seek another person rather than another night of solitary effort.
Gideon split himself between Zendikar's war and Ravnica's vulnerable citizens. Repeated travel and too little sleep made determination an unreliable substitute for capacity. During an attempt to rescue people from a gang, another legionnaire supplied help he could no longer provide alone.
On Zendikar, Sea Gate fell and valuable knowledge was lost with the dead. Jori En helped him toward the survivors, while a desperate escape from the Eldrazi ended in a fall into the water. His protective magic let him survive the impact; it did not restore the city.
He went to Ravnica to find Jace and collapsed from exhaustion. The need for allies emerged through specific failures, not a sudden loss of courage. His body had exposed the limits of an obligation he kept expanding. The immediate reason Gideon seeks Jace is physical exhaustion after trying to protect two planes at once, not indifference to Zendikar or a deliberate abandonment of the surviving army. He eventually collapses in Ravnica after asking another planeswalker to share the impossible responsibility. The future Gatewatch grows from this need for coordinated action.

A prisoner seeks power without repairing its source
Ob Nixilis takes the Khalni Heart while pursuing the return of his spark; the account stops before that restoration is complete.
Ob Nixilis remembered imprisonment and the hedron Nahiri had placed in him. Losing his spark had stranded him inside a condition he despised. He used visitors and deception in efforts to free himself from the stone rather than accepting the land's suffering as a reason to stay.
He then dug into Zendikar's living rock and reached the Khalni Heart. Taking its power served a personal escape plan. The world's destruction was a cost he was willing to accept, not the objective of a rescue disguised as theft.
The power renewed his hopes and his sense of other worlds. This account does not yet show a successfully restored spark. That distinction matters when following his later actions: a dangerous intention and an acquired resource are steps toward escape, not its completion. Ob Nixilis narrates the earlier damage to his planeswalking power from inside a long campaign of manipulating Zendikar's hedrons. His former human conquests, the Chain Veil's demon transformation, and the hedron suppressing his spark are separate events. In the Khalni Heart episode he approaches usable mana but is not yet shown re-igniting his spark: the actual restoration comes when he hijacks the much larger completed Sea Gate hedron ring.
