Teferi Akosa

Time mage, teacher and guardian of Zhalfir

Teferi can bend time, but his hardest lessons came from people forced to live with his solutions. Recovering his preserved spark and finding Zhalfir did not make protection, consent and responsibility the same thing.

Profile

Why Teferi Akosa matters

Teferi learned magic at the Tolarian Academy, where exceptional talent arrived well before good judgement. He became famous for manipulating time and infamous for treating rules as puzzles meant to be tested. Beneath the jokes was a mind capable of seeing possibilities faster than most people could describe the problem.

During the first Phyrexian invasion, Teferi removed Shiv and Zhalfir from the flow of Dominaria's time to keep them beyond the enemy's reach. The choice saved his people from immediate destruction, but it also separated families and left both regions trapped. When temporal rifts later threatened the Multiverse, he spent his spark returning Shiv and could no longer recover Zhalfir.

Life without a spark forced Teferi to inhabit time rather than simply command it. He raised a family, watched generations change and came to understand that protection without consent can become another kind of loss. When new crises called him back, his humour remained, but it was joined by a willingness to listen, teach and share responsibility.

Teferi eventually regained his preserved spark and helped the Gatewatch investigate New Phyrexia, even travelling into Dominaria's past to learn how the original Sylex had been used. The final invasion resolved the oldest wound in his life: Wrenn found Zhalfir through Realmbreaker, and Teferi led its forces home. He later lost his spark again, but this time he stood in a restored homeland surrounded by people able to choose their own future.

Jhoira had kept that spark in a powerstone; returning to planeswalking was not an unexplained second ignition. Niambi and the family he built without it mattered to the decision. On his later visit to the Brothers' War, Urza's answer about the Sylex made another cost explicit: the weapon needed a person, not merely correct machinery.

Stranded in Zhalfir after the Temporal Anchor failed, Teferi met a country that had continued living without him. Queen Wezna's people had their own present and their own judgement of his past. Wrenn and Eight made its return possible; Teferi contributed an army, not a solitary reversal of everything he had done. During the invasion, it was Wrenn and Eight who discovered a path back through Realmbreaker. Zhalfir's people had built their own lives; Teferi brought an army that chose to help the Mirrans, not a nation preserved as a relic. After victory, he held a brief bubble of time for Melira and Karn to heal Ajani and Nissa.
