At Urza's abandoned tower, a damaged coalition prepares to invade New Phyrexia while its enemies close around the Temporal Anchor

The Brothers’ War: The Last Redoubt

Saheeli, Kaya and Teferi turn Urza's tower into a final workshop. Their Sylex plan survives a Phyrexian assault, but Teferi does not return with it.

Why this story matters

The route in brief

Dominaria United ends with Karn captured, Jaya dead and the original Sylex destroyed. The survivors retreat to a place burdened with every lesson they are in danger of ignoring: Urza's tower. From there they need to build a second world-ending weapon, discover how to use it and assemble an alliance before Realmbreaker can connect New Phyrexia to the Multiverse.

Saheeli creates both the replica Sylex and the Temporal Anchor. Kaya keeps Teferi's spirit connected to the present. Jodah turns a monument to an old commander into a defensible headquarters, while Elspeth, Wrenn, Nissa and Chandra bring different knowledge of what Phyrexia takes from people and planes.

Their last redoubt is not safe enough to permit certainty. A ghost warns that reopening Urza's war machine repeats the past. Tezzeret serves Elesh Norn while searching for an exit. Rona attacks from within Dominaria's own history. The coalition leaves with an activation method, but also with Teferi stranded in time and the unresolved question of whether destroying New Phyrexia can be separated from destroying everyone still trapped there.

Story Chapters

  1. A Workshop in Urza's Shadow

Teferi gathers allies at Urza's tower, where Saheeli rebuilds the Sylex and Temporal Anchor without accepting her predecessor's values.

The tower offers secrecy, intact machinery and a symbolism nobody finds comfortable. Teferi once studied under Urza and knows how easily necessity can make old methods appear inevitable. He asks Jodah to lead while he is absent in time, a small but meaningful rejection of the command habits that shaped both his teacher and his younger self.

Saheeli treats Urza's ruins as components, not scripture. Her replica Sylex follows Karn's records, while her Temporal Anchor sends only Teferi's spirit into the past so he cannot deliberately alter it. She brings beauty into both designs because function is never culturally neutral. The objects should remember the cooperation that made them, not only the destruction they may enable.

New intelligence makes delay impossible. Realmbreaker appears to adapt Kaldheim's World Tree into a route for invasion across planes. Elspeth warns that an assault on New Phyrexia has failed before, yet the Mirran resistance cannot wait. The coalition must prepare for a war while resisting the belief that urgency makes every sacrifice automatically acceptable.

  2. The Ghost Who Refuses Repetition

General Sharaman attacks the Temporal Anchor because he remembers serving Urza well enough to recognise another righteous war machine.

The spirit haunting the tower is not an enemy who misunderstood its purpose. Sharaman commanded Urza's armies, buried family and watched supposedly righteous forces sack provinces for resources. He sees Saheeli restoring the machinery around him and concludes that history is arranging the same excuses with different names.

Saheeli tries to persuade him that New Phyrexia presents a threat large enough to justify the work. Sharaman has heard that argument before. His refusal forces the coalition to face a truth more difficult than sabotage: good intentions do not erase the resemblance between their plan and Urza's escalation.

Kaya destroys the weakening spirit before he can end the mission, then carries the moral weight of a death she cannot file among her usual villains. Saheeli offers compassion without pretending the choice was clean. When they activate the Anchor together, its power rests on trust between people who understand that necessity does not make them innocent.

  3. The Father in Pieces

Tezzeret escorts a dismembered Karn through New Phyrexia, discovers Realmbreaker's scale and realises Elesh Norn never intended to reward him.

Karn remains conscious while the Machine Orthodoxy dismantles him. Tezzeret watches because delivering the pieces is the final task supposedly standing between him and a darksteel body free of the Planar Bridge. Both are trapped by machines inside them: Karn by Phyrexian restraints and Tezzeret by a device that has made every master believe he can be owned.

Karn helps Tezzeret enter the restored Panopticon, hoping any information gained might matter. The Darksteel Eye reveals armies prepared on a scale the Planar Bridge could never transport. Realmbreaker is the missing structure, grown from the essence Vorinclex stole on Kaldheim. Tezzeret sees that his own portals helped make the invasion possible.

Elesh Norn accepts Karn as Phyrexia's symbolic father and orders Tezzeret back toward Dominaria instead of granting freedom. The betrayal ends his remaining calculation of loyal service. His turn toward Urabrask is self-preservation rather than redemption, but even a selfish fracture in Norn's coalition can become an opening for those she intends to conquer.

  4. Grief Beside the Defences

Elspeth, Jodah and Chandra make room for their dead before a Phyrexian assault turns mourning into the strength that saves the tower.

Elspeth arrives carrying memories of New Phyrexia that cannot be converted into strategy alone. Chandra and Jodah are grieving Jaya; Elspeth names Venser and Gideon. Their toast does not solve loss, but it prevents urgency from reducing the dead to motivation. They remember relationships rather than only the uses of sacrifice.

When Phyrexian forces attack, Jodah entrusts Elspeth with a spell Jaya left behind. Their combined light destroys the largest threat outside the tower, revealing power in Elspeth that she has spent years containing beneath borrowed identities. The victory leaves both exhausted while the visible battle conceals an infiltration.

Rona wounds Jodah and nearly kills Elspeth. Tezzeret intervenes, removes Rona and warns that the tower will fall, deliberately leaving a small crack in Phyrexia's plan. His mercy is tactical, not kind. Elspeth uses the reprieve to save Jodah and returns to the mission with one more reason to distrust victories offered by compromised allies.

  5. The Strike Team Departs

Nissa helps hold the tower, the Anchor collapses with Teferi still stretched through time and the coalition leaves for New Phyrexia without him.

Nissa and Chandra arrive with unresolved affection, old resentment and opposing instincts about the coming strike. Chandra wants every trace of Phyrexia burned for Jaya's death. Nissa asks what that means for Ajani, Karn and the Mirrans still fighting for their home. The argument establishes the choice the Sylex will eventually force: whether victory can distinguish the infected from the enemy.

During the assault, Dominaria's nature spirits initially reject Nissa because the plane remembers Planeswalker betrayals. Gaea finally answers by sharing both strength and rage. Wrenn stops Nissa from mistaking that rage for her own song, yet Nissa still kills a Phyrexian whose oil could restart the infection. Mercy and containment no longer align cleanly.

The Temporal Anchor implodes after Teferi transmits the activation method. His body remains in the capsule, stretched across distant time, while the Mirran offensive begins without him. Jodah and Wrenn stay to bring him back. The assembled strike team carries Saheeli's Sylex to New Phyrexia, united enough to leave but not united on what they will do when the weapon demands a person. Teferi was not killed by the Anchor's failure: his awareness surfaced on a distant beach in the isolated nation of Zhalfir. Those left with his body did not know where he had gone and still needed to rescue him.
