The promise of unity meets people who will not surrender the meaning of themselves
Phyrexia: Identity and Defiance
A chosen bond, a tyrant's nightmare and encounters with compleation reveal different meanings of belonging. From Neyali's resistance to Teferi's lost homeland, these stories challenge the claim that unity must mean surrendering a self.
Why this story matters
The route in brief
Phyrexia offers a universal answer to loneliness, injury and conflict: become part of it. These accounts expose how differently that offer works on a captive, a commander, a survivor or someone who believes power guarantees control. Their perspectives are not equally trustworthy, and the language of salvation often hides a demand for obedience.
The route begins before the strike on New Phyrexia. Huatli and Saheeli's voluntary connection offers a contrast to imposed unity; Ashiok then finds fear beneath Elesh Norn's certainty. Later chapters follow the resistance, the strike team's failures and Teferi in isolated Zhalfir.
Tezzeret's account extends into the invasion, rather than ending at the strike team's arrival. These are related portraits, not seven consecutive days. Their shared concern is whether loyalty, memory and desire can belong to a person rather than to the authority that claims them.

Before the crisis: a name revealed by choice
Huatli's correspondence turns a copper trade into a meeting with someone she already wanted to know.
A notice on Ravnica's planeswalker-only board asks discreetly for copper. Huatli answers, and the exchange with a correspondent signing as R becomes playful and personal. Trade opens a conversation about craft, travel and the lives they hope to build.
On her way to the meeting, Huatli encounters Saheeli and nearly admits her feelings. She hurries on because she has promised to meet someone else. In the tavern, Saheeli arrives too: the initial stands for Rai, and neither had recognised the other through the notes.
The connection is freely discovered, not imposed by someone promising to remove uncertainty. Their shared embarrassment becomes pleasure, and they leave together for another plane. This earlier episode belongs here as a contrast: intimacy can join lives without making those lives interchangeable.

Before the crisis: perfection has a nightmare
Ashiok uses Elspeth's image to find a fear Elesh Norn refuses to acknowledge.
Elesh Norn imagines her Orthodoxy as purity beyond organic weakness. Ashiok turns that certainty into a nightmare in which human flesh grows through her immaculate surroundings. Elspeth's likeness becomes part of the disturbance, linking Norn's fear to someone who escaped Phyrexia.
Norn does not simply submit to the intrusion. She brings the collective's presence into the dream and drives against Ashiok's work. Her response demonstrates real power while failing to erase the fact that she could be frightened.
The encounter is not Elspeth physically invading the Basilica, and its grotesque transformations are not a report of the waking courtyard. It is a test of Norn's mind. The leader who defines every other creature as flawed cannot safely admit what the test reveals about herself.

Ixhel makes something she is not allowed to want
The mission to kill Geth becomes an unauthorised act of creation.
Atraxa sends Ixhel to eliminate Geth. The lich's challenge to her obedience reaches a vulnerability she does not want to name. She kills him, but the victory leaves her wanting to preserve and transform rather than merely deliver a head.
Using recovered parts and some of her own wings, she makes Vishgraz. Atraxa condemns the creation and insists that Ixhel herself is only a weapon. The desire to create has become disobedience because it was not ordered.
Ixhel takes Vishgraz away and lets him go instead of destroying him. She does not leave with him, and the account does not declare her converted to the resistance. Her act is smaller and more specific: a purpose-made soldier recognises a want of her own and defies the command to erase its result.

Neyali's bargain is not the last word
Reyana seeks relief through compleation; Neyali risks herself for the people who still refuse it.
Reyana's longing for her transformed mother draws Neyali and companions into Slobad's trap. Slobad describes surrender as reunion and offers a bargain against the hidden Mirrans. Neyali trades herself for the release of three companions rather than treating their loyalty as permission to spend them.
Reyana's decision is voluntary in a way Neyali finds harder to bear than infection. She wants the suffering to end. Neyali is imprisoned above the place where that transformation will begin, trying to believe the others' safety makes the loss bearable.
Otharri refuses to abandon her. The firebird burns open the cages, and Neyali joins the prisoners' escape as her cell clears a route. She offers Reyana a final hand, but Reyana turns away. Resistance preserves a chance to live without resolving every grief or rescuing everyone who chooses a different answer.

Lukka's supposed ally becomes his new body
His confidence in domination blinds him to the change already happening inside him.
The scattered arrival leaves Lukka in the Hunter Maze with Nissa. He treats a local Phyrexian creature as something his bonding power can command. Wounds and mental changes accumulate while he insists that New Phyrexia is simply another environment he can master.
After the Wanderer's brief appearance, he and Nissa pursue Vorinclex and find Glissa as well. Lukka charges despite Nissa's doubts. His creature merges with him, expanding his body and turning their supposedly separate strengths into one transformed being.
He then advances on Nissa, interpreting her horror as the respect he wanted. The narration's delight is part of the catastrophe, not evidence of a good outcome. His old preference for being the one who deals harm gives compleation a language he is willing to accept.

Teferi returns to a homeland that kept living
A familiar country offers work, judgment and a different clock, not an uncomplicated absolution.
Teferi awakens in isolated Zhalfir unable to planeswalk away or command time as he expects. It is a lived country, not a preserved memory of his mistake. People fish, worship, organise and prepare for war while he struggles to contact Kaya.
Jabari brings him toward Queen Wezna. She has reasons to judge him, but the immediate crisis interrupts any simple reckoning: the Amber Tombs have been disturbed, Kaervek has escaped, and Mageta is wounded.
The Wanderer is released from an amber prison and warns that the strike on New Phyrexia failed. A month in Zhalfir does not match her experience of days elsewhere. Teferi has found the people he lost without yet restoring their connection to the wider world. Responsibility now requires joining their present rather than only apologising for their past.

Tezzeret gets a new body and keeps his old methods
His escape from Phyrexia includes a warning to Alara and a brutal encounter with Nashi.
The Planar Bridge is destroying Tezzeret's body. He uses Norn's fear of Elspeth to demand the promised darksteel replacement, then escapes the procedure's attempt to control him. A resilient new form does not make him free of every weakness.
On Alara, the invasion reaches Tidehollow sooner than he expects. He sends Estel toward Rafiq in Bant with a warning and a chance to live. His reasons mix an old connection to the place with the strategic value of slowing Phyrexia.
In Kamigawa, Nashi confronts him over Tamiyo. Tezzeret answers with violence against the youth's allies before revealing that she lives in a transformed state. He returns to a former Consortium base to rebuild his position. Helping one endangered person does not cancel the cruelty through which he continues to define survival.
