Ugin
Spirit dragon, scholar of the Blind Eternities and jailer of his twin
Ugin studies threats beyond ordinary combat, but even a spirit dragon cannot make containment permanent by intention alone. His return to Tarkir brings an answer to the storms and consequences his prison could not contain.
Profile
Why Ugin matters
Ugin and Nicol Bolas were born as twin Elder Dragons on Dominaria, but power led them toward different questions. Bolas sought control; Ugin studied how worlds, mana and the Blind Eternities worked. Transformation into the Spirit Dragon gave his magic a colourless character and made understanding structure as important to him as victory.
The Eldrazi presented a problem destruction might worsen. Ugin joined Sorin and Nahiri in drawing the titans to Zendikar, where Nahiri’s hedrons fixed their vast forms in place. The prison saved other worlds, but it placed continuing risk on Nahiri’s home and depended on promises the older planeswalkers did not keep equally.
Bolas later killed Ugin on Tarkir, turning the plane’s history toward a future without dragons. Sarkhan travelled into the past and preserved Ugin inside a hedron cocoon. That rescue rewrote Tarkir around living dragonlords and allowed Ugin to awaken in time to advise planeswalkers confronting the released Eldrazi.
After Ravnica's defenders stripped Bolas of power, Ugin carried him into the Meditation Realm and remained as his guard. The solution demanded his continuing attention. By the time Narset found him, he had entwined his own existence with the prison, leaving Tarkir without the presence that once steadied its dragonstorms.
Narset could not simply ask him to leave: freeing the keeper threatened to free the captive. Jace's seizure of the realm's power broke that arrangement. The prison's failure made personal responsibility a living constraint rather than a guarantee of permanent safety.
Ugin stopped Sarkhan on Tarkir, but Bolas escaped. Containment had failed; defeating the immediate attack did not restore the prison.
