Vraska

Gorgon revolutionary, guildmaster and survivor of weaponised memory

Vraska's struggle against oppression carried her from assassin and pirate to guildmaster. Her love for Jace later demanded resistance to his plans, leaving her to carry responsibility alongside grief.

Profile

Why Vraska matters

Vraska grew up a gorgon in Ravnica’s Golgari Swarm, where prejudice from the surface guilds could become law, prison and casual brutality. An Azorius crackdown placed her in a detention site where abuse ignited her spark. She returned with a planeswalker’s reach and an assassin’s list, convinced that making oppressors afraid was the most reliable form of justice available.

Nicol Bolas offered Vraska the Golgari throne in exchange for finding Ixalan’s Immortal Sun. There she commanded a pirate crew and met Jace after he had lost his memories. Away from their established roles, hostility became cooperation and then affection. When Jace’s past returned, they hid her most dangerous memories so Bolas would believe the mission had succeeded without discovering their alliance.

Back on Ravnica, Vraska became guildmaster and was pushed into Bolas’s larger design. She petrified Isperia and entered the War of the Spark carrying guilt, ambition and a plan whose pieces she could not safely remember. Recovery of those memories let her choose Ravnica and its people over the dragon who had promised her power.

The strike on New Phyrexia found Vraska already infected in Sheoldred's coliseum. Jace offered her one last imagined day on Ravnica, but the Phyrexian corruption overtook her; her newly barbed tail infected him before he could flee. During the invasion that violence also reached Ravnica's undercity. Survival left her accountable for more than the injuries others had inflicted on her. Her partnership with Jace and care for Loot developed beside a dangerous wish to repair everything Phyrexia had damaged.

During the Ghirapur Grand Prix she helped Jace take Loot back, but his treatment of the child exposed the cost of their plan. On Tarkir she rejected a reset that would replace the woman she had become with someone he imagined unhurt. After believing Jace lost, she found shelter with Ranna on Vryn.

When she learned he lived, love became a reason to stop him. She recovered his rejected selves instead of separating a blameless lover from a disposable villain. Her final act honoured their agreed end. Tam's later arrival offered a relationship to build, not a restored Jace to possess.
