Why Wrenn matters

Wrenn once guarded a forest on a plane whose name remains unknown. When an outside force tried to burn it, she drew the blaze into herself. The act saved something beyond her but left an inferno she could not contain; pain ignited her spark and carried her to another world. Merging with a nearby tree gave both beings the control neither possessed alone.

Her hosts are partners rather than equipment. Wrenn names them by the order of their joining and listens to their needs. On Innistrad she let Six take root as a healthy oak. A dangerous tangle of Teferi's magic trapped them while her fire grew harder to contain; Wrenn helped him unravel it, and the spare time let a compatible sapling mature into Seven. Their new friendship included her promise to help with his lost homeland.

Wrenn and Chandra entered New Phyrexia together. Seven was destroyed during the attempt to reach Realmbreaker. Melira offered Wrenn help to withstand the tree's corrupting contact, and Chandra kept the heat of her fire bearable. Wrenn found a will to grow beneath the invasion tree's enforced obedience and joined with it as a partner rather than seizing it as a tool. She named this partner Eight. Within its vast awareness, she searched beyond Norn's network and found Zhalfir, the land Teferi had lost outside ordinary time.

Wrenn and Eight enabled the exchange that brought Zhalfir back and removed New Phyrexia from the accessible Multiverse. The effort burned Wrenn down to ash. Teferi found an acorn within it, carried that remnant away and planted it on Zhalfir.

Later, Nissa sat beside the fast-growing sprout under Zhalfir's inherited suns. Growth was visible, but Wrenn had not simply resumed her earlier life or taken another numbered tree partner. The little plant gave Nissa somewhere to remember the treesong that had broken Phyrexia's hold.
