Joining the Maestros gives Elspeth access without belonging. She catalogs art in Xander's museum, studies damaged depictions of angels and accepts assignments designed to measure her discretion. An exchange with an Obscura informant becomes an ambush, but Elspeth delivers the package and returns with a sharper understanding of how every family uses outsiders as disposable distance between intention and consequence.
Xander recognizes that she is pursuing something larger than advancement. Over a glass of Halo, he explains that the substance is more than a fashionable intoxicant: it amplifies magic, concentrates influence and once protected the city. He promises full access to his archives if Elspeth completes one final task. She must enter the Cabaretti's orbit and identify the source they intend to reveal at the Crescendo.
The assignment brings Elspeth to Kitt Kanto, Jinnie Fay and Giada. Giada has been surrounded by comfort but starved of ordinary choices, and Elspeth's direct attention feels different from the possessive affection of the family. Their first exchanges establish a trust neither woman planned. Elspeth sees someone being prepared for use; Giada sees a protector who asks what she wants before deciding where she belongs.
The closer Elspeth moves to the Font, the less convincing the families' language becomes. They speak of loyalty while arranging betrayals, of protection while collecting people and of family while measuring every relationship for leverage. Elspeth continues the deception because Xander's archive may help stop Phyrexia, but Giada turns the mission from information gathering into a question she cannot postpone: what is knowledge worth if obtaining it leaves another captive?
