Garruk Wildspeaker
Primal hunter carrying a curse that turned pursuit into obsession
Garruk is most at ease among beasts, where strength is honest and survival needs no explanation. The Chain Veil corrupted that bond, changing one of the Multiverse’s greatest hunters into prey to his own fury.
Profile
Why Garruk Wildspeaker matters
Garruk built his life around the speech of tracks, weather and living territory. He prefers the direct company of animals to cities and courts, and his magic answers that preference: beasts gather at his call, his body draws power from the land and a hunted trail rarely escapes him. There is joy in that life as well as violence. For Garruk, the wild is not an empty arena for conquest but a community whose rules he understands without translation.
That certainty broke on Shandalar. Garruk confronted Liliana Vess while she carried the Chain Veil, and the artifact’s power infected him with black mana. The curse poisoned his connection to nature and made the presence of other planeswalkers feel like a provocation. He followed Liliana to Innistrad seeking a cure, but every clash fed the same corruption. A hunter accustomed to trusting instinct could no longer separate his own will from the appetite growing inside him.
The danger soon reached beyond Liliana. Garruk began hunting planeswalkers, and Avacyn sent the tracker Vronos to capture him before the curse claimed more lives. Vronos approached the task with preparation and holy protection; Garruk answered by turning the pursuit around and killing him. The encounter showed why Garruk is frightening even without corruption: he reads terrain, patience and fear as parts of one contest, then forces an opponent to fight on his terms.
Garruk’s story is therefore larger than a catalogue of trophies. It is about a man whose greatest gift—trust in instinct—became the route through which an alien magic controlled him. Moments of recovery do not erase what the curse made him do, nor do they turn him into a sociable hero. He remains a solitary protector, suspicious of civilisation and most promises, trying to reclaim a relationship with the wild that once required no defence.
